Who are the new cast additions for the 2020 sequel Coming 2 America? Directed by Craig Brewer, the comedy is a follow-up to 1988 classic Coming to America, in which Eddie Murphy stars as an African prince who travels to the United States in search of a romantic partner. Coming 2 America will release in December 2020 on Amazon Prime.

Approximately 40 years after breaking into the industry on Saturday Night Live, Murphy has returned to his comedy roots in recent years. In the 2019 Netflix biopic Dolemite Is My Name, he exudes all the charisma and charm that made him a viable A-list movie star in the early ’80s, all the while reminding audiences of his extraordinary comedic timing. Murphy also hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time in 35 years in 2019 and signed a deal with Netflix to star in Beverly Hills Cop 4. Now, with Coming 2 America, Murphy takes another big step in his career as he approaches his sixties.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Coming 2 America may be a traditional comedy, but Murphy probably won’t deliver a classic comedic performance. In the original film, he grounds the narrative by tapping into the mindset of an African prince who genuinely wants to be appreciated for his moral compass. Murphy does indeed have comedic moments via the characters Randy Watson, Saul, and Clarence, but he dials down his usual antics as Akeem. With the Coming to America sequel, Murphy has another opportunity to stun audiences with his full skill set while playing off his co-stars in comedic situations. Here are the new cast additions for Coming 2 America.

Jermaine Fowler

Jermaine Fowler joins the Coming 2 America cast as Akeem’s son, Lavelle. In Coming to America, Akeem leaves his native Zamunda and searches for a potential wife in Queens, New York. He falls in love with Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley) and later marries her. Coming 2 America focuses on Akeem’s return to the United States upon learning that he has an American son with a different woman.

Fowler is best known for portraying Salvador in Sorry to Bother You and Russell in Crashing. He also starred in the sketch comedy series Friends of the People and voiced Pete Repeat in BoJack Horseman.

Leslie Jones

Comedian Leslie Jones co-stars as Lavelle’s mother in Coming 2 America. In pop culture, Jones is best known for her six-season run on Saturday Night Live (2014-2019), and for starring as Patty Tolan in the 2016 Ghostbusters update. She has also appeared in the feature films Top Five, Trainwreck, and Masterminds.

Wesley Snipes

In Coming 2 America, Wesley Snipes portrays General Izzi – the brother of the woman Akeem was supposed to marry in Coming to America, Imani. The original film opens with Murphy’s character stressing out about his pre-scheduled life, and he takes off for America before marrying Imani.

A former A-list movie star, Snipes rose to fame during the late ’80s and early ’90s. After appearing in Michael Jackson’s “Bad” music video, he portrayed the speedy Willie Mays Hayes in the comedy Major League. Snipes then took on dramatic roles in King of New York, Mo’ Better Blues, and New Jack City before displaying his versatility in Jungle Fever and White Men Can’t Jump. He ultimately transformed into a true action hero upon starring in the 1998 film Blade. Snipes recently appeared in What We Do in the Shadows, Dolemite Is My Name and Paper Empire.

Tracy Morgan

Comedian Tracy Morgan portrays Lavelle’s Uncle Reem in Coming 2 America. Another Saturday Night Live alum, Morgan was a cast member on the sketch comedy series from 1996 to 2003. He later co-starred as Tracy Jordan in 30 Rock, an NBC series that was inspired by Tina Fey’s experiences at Saturday Night Live. After surviving a tragic 2014 car accident, Morgan returned to network television with a starring role as Tray Barker in The Last O.G. He recently voiced Captain Caveman in the 2020 film Scoob.

Morgan Freeman

The iconic Morgan Freeman joins the Coming 2 America cast, as confirmed by Murphy in December 2019, almost casually in an interview. Since then, he’s not been officially confirmed and it’s unclear what role Freeman will play, but he’ll most likely make a cameo.

To many moviegoers, Freeman will always be remembered for portraying Red Redding in 1994 classic The Shawshank Redemption. In the same decade, he starred alongside Brad Pitt in David Fincher’s crime thriller Se7en and later landed a role as Lucius Fox in The Dark Knight. In recent years, Freeman has portrayed Allan Trumbull in the Fallen film franchise, and also had a brief stint as Chief Justice Wilbourne in Madam Secretary.

KiKi Layne

Rising star KiKi Layne portrays Akeem’s first daughter Meeka in Coming 2 America. Layne delivered a breakthrough performance as Tish Rivers in If Beale Street Could Talk, and followed that up with another stunning performance as Bessie in Native Son. In pop culture, Layne is arguably best known for co-starring as Nile in the 2020 Netflix hit The Old Guard.

Teyana Taylor

Musician Teyana Taylor was confirmed for Coming 2 America in August 2019, however character details haven’t been released.

Taylor made a name for herself by choreographing Beyoncé’s “Ring the Alarm” music video as a 15-year-old, and for appearing as herself in MTV reality show My Super Sweet 16. Since 2010, Taylor has released three studio albums and has appeared in movies such as Madea’s Big Happy Family and The After Party. She’s perhaps best known for her focal dance performance in Kanye West’s 2016 music video “Fade.”

Rick Ross

Hip-hop artist Rick Ross makes a cameo as himself in Coming 2 America. The six-time Grammy Award nominee allowed Murphy and company to shoot at his Georgia mansion, and so he rightfully earned a role in the sequel.

In 2006, Ross released his debut album, Port of Miami, featuring the #1 Billboard single “Hustlin.'” Since then, he’s released nine more albums and will unveil Richer Than I’ve Ever Been in 2020. Ross has also contributed music to the soundtracks for Django Unchained and Suicide Squad.
