Community: How Troy’s Fate Was Teased In Season 5

The whereabouts of Troy Barnes was hinted at following the character’s exit from Community season 5. The character, played by Donald Glover, was one of the original members of the study group which served as the focus of Dan Harmon’s comedy. After upholding his popularity stemming from being his high school’s quarterback, Troy evolved into his geeky true self while studying at Greendale Community College. Here’s what ultimately happened to the character and what it could mean for the series’ future.

Troy helped form the study group in the Community pilot alongside, Jeff Winger, Annie Edison, Shirley Bennett, Pierce Hawthorne, Britta Perry, and Abed Nadir – the latter of which went on to become his best friend and eventual roommate. Troy graduated from Greendale ahead of season 5, but he and most of the study group re-enrolled when Jeff took a job as a professor. His second chapter at the college wouldn’t last very long, however.

Glover reprised his role as Troy in Community season 5, but his arc only lasted five episodes. The actor, who also had a successful music career under the alias of Childish Gambino, decided to leave for personal reasons. Co-star Chevy Chase, exited prior to the season, leaving the series without the eldest member of the study group, Pierce. To conclude Pierce’s story, he was killed off from the show, but the character left behind a detailed will. Troy was bequeathed Pierce’s hefty fortune if he sailed around the world. In “Geothermal Escapism,” the study group bid Troy farewell as their friend embarked on the journey with LeVar Burton. Troy didn’t make any future appearances, but his fate during his sailing trip was seemingly revealed in the very next episode – and it involved pirates.

How Troy’s Fate Could Tie Into A Community Movie

In “Analysis of Cork-Based Networking,” the criminology professor named Buzz Hickey was watching a news broadcast. The ticker on the bottom of the screen read “LeVar Burton and non-celebrity companion captured by pirates in the Gulf of Mexico.” The small detail claimed that Troy never succeeded in his global journey, meaning that he would never obtain Pierce’s fortune. That said, Abed or the rest of Troy’s friends never mentioned his fate or the fact he was missing. It did, however, provide a plausible explanation into why Glover never made any guest appearances before the series came to an end – but that doesn’t mean there’s no hope for the future.

With the renewed interest in the series after Netflix joined Hulu in streaming rights, the hope for a Community movie has picked up steam. Glover has his own ideas for the movie, including a rescue mission of Troy carried out by his old friends. The fact that the actor joined the recent reunion and has been speaking about the movie has lead fans to believe that he would be up for returning to the franchise. Troy’s fate might be grim but it would make for an exciting plot for a sequel spinoff. If anyone could rescue Troy from pirates, it would be the Greendale study group.
