Side characters are the side dishes of a meal. They accentuate the main character and help TV writers to expand the world of a show, bringing more life, humor, grief, and joy into their fictional world. It is also a treat when a show spends an episode or two following a side character predominantly, to reveal another compartment to the canonical maze.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia employs this plot-making device often, using a rich tapestry of side characters, like Rickety Cricket, Maureen Ponderosa, and Mac’s parents, to prove how awful and toxic the gang is. However, a lot of shows sometimes fail to utilize their side characters, much to the disappointment of fans. They would have liked it if the writers had delved into their backgrounds a bit more.

10 Magnitude (Community)

Community’s Magnitude is certainly one of TV’s most charming, but also mysterious, side characters. One of the great mysteries of Magnitude is that he is actually never shown speaking. All he says is “Pop Pop.” In the episode where the gang tries to solve a mystery, Law And Order-style, it is implied that Magnitude gave a big speech just before the camera cuts to him. Audiences don’t get to see, neither hear, what Magnitude said.

One of Magnitude’s professors also tells the student that, although everyone seems to love it when he says “Pop Pop,” they are actually mocking him, not laughing with him. So why does Magnitude continue to only say, “Pop Pop?”

9 Brett Bunsen (Archer)

Brett is one of the unfortunate workers that is trapped within the toxic vortex of ISIS (International Secret Intelligence Service). He seems like a normal, regular guy but, unfortunately, like everyone else at the institute, he is bullied severely. Due to the team’s carelessness, he also gets shot several times over the course of the show – to the extent that he is killed.

But why does Brett always end up being the one who is shot consistently? Nobody else at the office manages to get shot as much as Brett does. Brett also seems to be really disliked by the ISIS crew. While he was a jerk for mocking Archer for having breast cancer, it did look like their hatred began before this incident. So why did everyone dislike him?

8 Marshmallow (Bob’s Burgers)

Who is the great mystery that is Marshmallow? She pops in and she pops out of the Belcher’s lives, but viewers don’t really know anything about her. From what the show has revealed, Marshmallow is a transgender woman who is very outgoing and carefree. Since her introduction in season 1, she has become a fan-favorite character.

The only issue is, the writers have failed to develop her character properly. Other than the show revealing she is a sex worker, nothing else is known about her. The viewers don’t know where she goes when she’s not with the Belchers. They don’t know what her interests are or if she has any family. She deserves to have a developed and well-written storyline.

7 Principal Lewis (American Dad)

Principal Lewis is one of the most unreliable characters in television history. A drug smoking, gang member, and an ex-con, Principal Lewis is clearly unsuitable to be around children. He is seen to drug his own students, beat them up, and even encourages them to break the law. So it’s not surprising that Steve questions how he ever became an educator.

Which is a very good question. If Lewis was heavily involved in the life of crime, how did he finesse his way into becoming the principal of a high school? Did no one do a background check?

6 Mrs. Puff (SpongeBob SquarePants)

Mrs. Puff is a middle-aged, mild-mannered driving school teacher in the sleepy town of Bikini Bottom. She has a pleasant voice and lives a quiet, mundane life. Mrs. Puff, however, has a dark secret past. When she finally grants SpongeBob his driving license, because she is tired of SpongeBob annoying her in boating school, Mrs. Puff alludes to the fact that she is on the run from her old life. After engaging in criminal behavior, she changed her name to Mrs. Puff and then moved to Bikini Bottom. But what did she do? It must have been something terrible for her to change her identity…

5 Gunther (Friends)

Gunther is the blunt, passive-aggressive manager of Central Perk. He is obsessed with Rachel and has an unhidden hatred for anyone that Rachel dates. Friends portray this as a humorous, albeit obsessive crush, but Gunther’s actions are very creepy.

He stalks Rachel and he has no trouble breaking Rachel’s heart by telling her that Ross cheated on her in his misguided efforts to have Rachel to himself. He may be quiet and mild-mannered, but Gunther’s obsession with Rachel is an all-consuming hobby for the coffee shop manager.

So what does Gunther do when he is not working? Does he have hobbies or any friends? Does he date other women? Was he always waiting for Rachel to come to her senses and choose to be with him?

4 Trev (Bob’s Burgers)

Jimmy Pesto’s bartender and loyal sidekick, Trev, has a very unhealthy, co-dependent relationship with his boss. Trev and Jimmy Pesto are always together. In particular, Trev is always present to laugh at Jimmy’s zings against Bob.

Despite being a great sidekick, Pesto still (consistently) verbally abuses Trev. Yet, despite Bob and Linda trying to show Trev that Pesto’s behavior was unacceptable, he still chooses to hang around him. Is it because he is devoted to their friendship or is he in love with Pesto? If it is the latter, then fans would like to have seen this explored.

3 Mrs. Robinson (The Amazing World Of Gumball)

Mr. and Mrs. Robinson live next to the Watersons in The Amazing World Of Gumball. Gumball and Darwin have an unhealthy obsession with Mr. Robinson and love him a lot. This is unfortunate news for Mr. Robinson, who finds them incredibly annoying and wants them to leave him alone.

In one episode, the two brothers want to find out why Mrs. Robinson is so evil. They theorize that she cannot have been born evil, and there must be something that happened to have triggered her to become so evil. When they find her diary, Gumball and Darwin find to their dismay that she only writes in “Meh”.

But this brings up a lot of questions? What language is “Meh?” Why is she the only one who speaks it around her? Is she really from the fiery pits of Hell as her tag says? Why did Mr. Robinson choose to marry an evil woman-puppet? Fans would have liked to get answers to these questions.

2 Cooper And Beverly (Bob’s Burgers)

Cooper and Beverly are an old age couple, who own a pot farm in Wonder Wharf. The Belcher kids meet them after Bob fires them to go have a nice summer without work. However, the Belcher kids end up helping out on the farm since they have gotten used to working.

Unfortunately, at the end of the episode, Cooper and Beverly are arrested, and probably sentenced to prison terms. Now that US states are legalizing cannabis, were they released? Have they started a new farm? Do the Belchers still keep in contact with them? There are so many open-ended questions to be addressed.

1 Luna (The Boondocks)

Luna was a one-time date with Grandad that turned into hell. Grandad, finding himself constantly catfished by women he met online, was finally happy to find Luna, because all he cares about is looks. However, Luna soon kidnaps his grandsons and tries to torture Grandad because he rejected her. In all fairness, Grandad turned her down, because she admitted to killing men in the past, including her an ex.

But what happened to all these men? Did she hide the bodies so expertly that the police could not find any evidence to charge her? How many men has she actually killed? Did the authorities catch up to her in the end? All reasonable concerns fans would like to know the answers to.
