Michael Chaves, director of The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It, has provided fans with a look at the demon that was originally intended to have its own spinoff but was ultimately cut from the recent film. The creature’s existence was previously revealed by Chaves shortly after The Conjuring 3’s release. This ended up prompting disappointment from those who felt that a demonic entity would’ve considerably helped the film.

In terms of box office success and critical acclaim, The Conjuring3 definitely ranks as the least accomplished entry in the highly popular horror franchise. Eschewing the haunted house formula that the first two films found success with, the third film instead focuses on the real-life case of Arne Johnson, the first person in U.S. history to claim demonic possession as a defense against a murder charge. This time around, the supernatural entity that Ed and Lorraine Warren find themselves up against isn’t a tremendously large and almighty demon, either, but rather a human character known as The Occultist. Using various supernatural rituals to summon demons, The Occultist provides a different but interesting addition to the legacy of evil encounters faced by the Warrens. But there was a point when an additional antagonist was actively being incorporated into the film, only to eventually be cut.

After Chaves previously teased the demon that wasn’t to be in The Conjuring 3, he’s now provided fans with a first look at the creature. As per ComicBook.com, the recent Conjuring Watch Party was held via social media, allowing Chaves and other members of the cast to share some of their favorite experiences from production on The Conjuring 3. The short clip in which the cut demon was shown comes from Chaves’ official Twitter account and the scene takes place in Arne’s prison cell when the demon comes to pay a visit. Check out the clip below:

As Chaves has previously stated, the demonic character seen in the above footage had the potential to be a spinoff character. However, when the decision was made to remove the character as a result of two antagonists being too much for one film, The Conjuring 3 became the first film in the series to not end with a new character on which to build a separate franchise around. Previous demonic spinoffs, Annabelle and The Nun, have found their own degree of success in standalone capacities, but there are no reported plans to create something else out of The Occultist character.

While some fans of The Conjuring franchise might see the decision to cut the demon character from The Conjuring 3 as a bad move, in the end, it was probably for the best. As previously mentioned, the third film didn’t find the same level of success as its predecessors did – despite being the second highest grossing horror film of 2021, so far. Because of that, it would have been harder to build interest in a spinoff. This isn’t why the demon was cut from the film in the first place, of course, but in hindsight, it does seem like a smart move.
