Control Ultimate Edition is now available on both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and the game’s performance on both of the new consoles has been compared comprehensively. Control was initially released back in 2019, and for its first anniversary, publisher 505 Games and developer Remedy Entertainment released Control Ultimate Edition on PC, with the last-generation console versions following a month after. The game’s launch on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S was then delayed to this year to give Remedy more time to polish the game’s upgrade for new consoles.

The events surrounding the announcement and release of Control Ultimate Edition on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S were filled with significant controversy. Owners of the original version of Control did not receive free upgrades of the game for the new consoles like most cross-gen titles have done, instead forcing them to purchase the Ultimate Edition separately to experience the benefits of the upgrade. The controversy grew further when some owners of the base game accidentally received upgrades to Control Ultimate Editon, causing many to accuse 505 Games of a shameless cash-grab.

Digital Foundry has compared Control Ultimate Edition’s performance on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S  and the game features a Graphics and Performance mode on the PS5 and Xbox Series X while the Series S is automatically locked to Performance mode. The Graphics mode essentially turns on ray tracing support for the game and locks the game to 30fps. On the other hand, Performance mode lifts the frame-rate limit, bringing it up to 60fps.

The comparison adds that the visual quality and performance of the game on both the PS5 and Series X are almost neck-and-neck, with the only notable differences being the PS5 presenting slightly different gamma levels and the Xbox Series X exhibiting stuttering during certain situations when in Graphics mode. The aforementioned stuttering is also apparently present on the Series S, even though it’s locked in Performance mode, which is an issue that Remedy plans to fix in a future update.

Remedy previously revealed that Control Ultimate Edition will run at a native resolution of 1440p on with temporal upscaling to 2160p output on both the PS5 and Xbox Series X while the Series S, with its lower system specifications, will run at a native 900p resolution with a temporal upscale to 1080p. Dynamic resolution scaling is also apparently not implemented on any of the consoles.

With how well Control Ultimate Edition‘s been received on new consoles, the controversial requirement to purchase the game separately from the original release may be worth the impressive upgrades to its looks and performance to some. Hopefully, Remedy is able to sort out the stuttering issue on the Xbox Series X/S soon to completely match or outdo the PS5’s more stable performance.

Control is available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
