Don’t say that Coraline is not a comfort film unless you want to see the movie start trending on the internet – on Wednesday, a Twitter user made one such claim and now Coraline fans are flooding the app with reasons why they love the film. The stop-motion animation has indeed been referred to as a creepy movie before. After all, Coraline follows the titular character (voiced by Dakota Fanning) as she discovers an idealized yet strangely unsettling world, complete with a scary, spider-like lady who wants to sew buttons into people’s eyes. Yet despite the  ghoulish elements seen throughout the film, fans have been endlessly charmed by Coraline thanks to its subtle deeper message and its stunning visuals. Each frame of the movie is rife with detail and care that can be felt by the viewers, which makes sense considering it took a week for them to film just a minute and 30-seconds of the movie.

Based on the the novel by prolific fantasy author, Neil Gaiman, Coraline was released in 2009 and is the first ever feature length stop-motion film that was released in 3D. The movie was made by the production company, Laika, a studio which specializes in stop-motion animation. Laika later went on to make four other major blockbusters, including ParaNorman. After Coraline premiered, it was nominated for a Golden Globes, an Academy Award, and a number of other honors. It also received a new wave of popularity a few years when it was made available to stream on Netflix.

If that is not enough proof to show how popular the movie is, perhaps a quick scroll through Twitter today will convince you. Coraline has been trending on Twitter after one user joked, “bitches be like this movie ‘radiate comfort’ and the movie is:” followed by snapshots of the film. Fans were quick to defend Coraline and the comfort it provides. Even famous singer, Kehlani, tweeted, saying she’s one of the “bitches” who thinks the movie “radiates comfort.” Continue below to see more tweets:

Since the movie came out 12 years ago, there have, of course, been murmurs of a sequel or a live-action remake, yet those rumors appear to have just been fans and their wishful thinking. Gaiman quickly debunked the rumors, calling them “nonsense” and explaining that a remake had never crossed his mind. While there are many fans who enjoy a refurbished production of a classic film, perhaps it’s a good thing that it wasn’t remade. One of the movie’s comforting elements is how it is tangibly connected to the 2000s era that was invested in experimental movie making.

While the Coraline discourse is a fun way to reminisce about the movie, it’s worth noting that the film can simply be both scary and comforting. There’s no doubt that Coraline works as a scary movie, especially for young children. Yet the coming-of-age themes that drive the narrative gives the chance to feel unnerving while also radiating comfort. This aligns with Gaiman’s penchant for creating unique and subtly profound messaging under the guise of fantasy stories. Seeing as there are thousands of fans who find comfort in Coraline, it’s clear that there the movie is already successfully charming – even if it gives some fans the heebie-jeebies.
