Counting On’s Jill Duggar has come out to explain her decision to cut ties with her family. Jill, who is the mother of two children, decided to part ways after her independence was “taken away.”

The large family had always captured TLC viewers’ attention on their show 19 Kids And Counting. The show starred Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar and their 19 children. The large Arkansas family of devout Christians choose to live by strict standards and morals, which include the girls participating in courtships and dressing modestly (no pants are allowed). TLC cameras filmed as the ten boys and nine girls (Joshua, twins Jana and John-David, Jill, Jessa, Jinger, Joseph, Josiah, Joy-Anna, twins Jedidiah and Jeremiah, Jason, James, Justin, Jackson, Johannah, Jennifer, Jordyn-Grace, and Josie) started to grow up and date. However, a dark side emerged in recent years, when the eldest son Josh was accused of sexually abusing several of his Duggar sisters, as well as a family friend. This is alleged to have happened when they were younger, and the scandal led to the show’s cancellation, but the network did decide to give the sisters a spinoff.

Jill and her husband Derick Dillard were not always seen in the best light on the show. The tension was mainly due to Derick’s outlandish opinions on women’s work and gay couples. Derick also caused a rift in the family by accusing Jim Bob of making his daughter ask permission to visit at the family’s big house. The Duggar family has never recovered. Jill recently opened up about her controlling family to E Online. The mother of two explained to viewers that she and Derick couldn’t, “choose what jobs we were allowed to accept and even where we were allowed to live was taken away from us.” The 29-year-old added that any goals the couple had for their small family were not prioritized.

Derick revealed that the couple spent money working towards reality TV-related opportunities that only hit a dead end because the family didn’t sign off on them. Fans will recall the couple decided to leave the show back in 2017,  saying: “By that point we’d had enough. We knew we had to pull out completely to reevaluate and get our bearings.”

Since leaving Counting On, the couple has been able to focus on their marriage and two small boys. They are parents to five-year-old Israel David and 3-year-old Samuel Scott. Jill and Derick have no plans to reunite with their family on the small screen anytime soon. At the moment, Derick Dillard is working on his law degree and Jill is still a homemaker.
