A recent fan mod adds the highly requested Crash Bandicoot to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Nintendo’s massive mascot crossover fighting game series has seen plenty of guest appearances from third-party characters like Sonic The Hedgehog and Final Fantasy VII’s Cloud Strife, and there is no shortage of fans requesting additional gaming icons for Smash’s ever-growing roster. One of the most popular of these dream Super Smash Bros. combatants is Crash Bandicoot, with even the producers of 2020’s Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time stating that it would be a dream come true to see the delightfully demented marsupial face off against the likes of Mario and Donkey Kong.

However, Crash’s appearance in Super Smash Bros. wasn’t to be, at least not for the series’ most recent installment on the Nintendo Switch. Back in October, Super Smash Bros. Brawl creator Masahiro Sakurai revealed that the final DLC guest character to be coming to the game would not be Crash, but the equally-requested Sora from the Kingdom Hearts series. Sakurai later revealed that he would be taking a break from Super Smash Bros for the time being, meaning that fans will have to wait for quite some time before Crash could appear in a new Super Smash Bros. game, at least officially.

As reported by Dexerto, a modder by the handle of S77 recently posted an updated version of a previous Super Smash Bros. Ultimate mod by Mastaklo to GameBanana. This mod adds Crash Bandicoot as a playable character, working off the moveset of Dr. Mario with a few Crash-inspired alterations such as an attack involving Aku-Aku and a jump animation altered from the Mii Brawler. A few other fun touches include a custom announcer voice clip for Crash, a new entrance animation in which the friendly Bandicoot arrives through a portal as he did in Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, and even a Crash-themed Kirby form for when the little pink puffball inevitably copies Crash’s powers during a round of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

As many fans have noted, having Crash Bandicoot as a guest combatant in Super Smash Bros. would be incredibly fitting, seeing as how he was originally designed to compete with fellow Smash fighters Mario and Sonic in the late 90s – to the point where the commercials for the original Crash Bandicoot featured the lovable marsupial invading Nintendo’s headquarters to call Mario out for a fight. Crash has seen something of a resurgence in recent years with the releases of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy collection and the aforementioned Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, and Activision’s recent buyout by Microsoft has possibly opened the door for future Crash Bandicoot titles on Xbox.

This new ownership has fans wondering if Crash Bandicoot could appear in a Super Smash Bros. game down the road, as the Microsoft-owned Banjo-Kazooie was represented as a guest character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In the meantime, it seems that modders are more than happy to pick up the slack in bringing Crash into the mascot crossover arena, faithfully capturing the classic 90s gaming icon’s moveset and personality to finally grant him that long-awaited match-up against Mario.
