Tonight fans of Critical Role will be treated to an adventure in the Lands Between for an Elden Ring one-shot run by game master Matthew Mercer. FromSoftware’s new open-world title has only been out for a few days yet is still managing to set records with both critical reception and sales figures.

Even before its official worldwide debut, Elden Ring was already FromSoftware’s best-reviewed game according to critics and that only seemed to add to the anticipation which culminated in setting Steam records the day before its true launch. While some dedicated players have already managed to finish it, many are still in the process of tackling the massive title for the first time. One streamer went as far as to do a nonstop playthrough that ended up lasting more than four full days. Even with its launch behind it, however, the excitement around Elden Ring persists and may get more of a boost tonight with a Dungeons & Dragons twist.

Renown web series Critical Role will be hosting a sponsored Elden Ring one-shot tonight, March 1, at 7 p.m. Pacific time. The show’s longtime game master Matthew Mercer will run the solo RPG adventure based on Elden Ring, the game that George R. R. Martin helped create and players will feature series regulars Marisha Ray and Sam Riegel along with experienced role-players Krystina Arielle, Brennan Lee Mulligan, and Alexander Ward. In anticipation of the event, Mercer showcased an Elden Ring promo box he received from Bandai Namco which, among other items, includes a sword.

Critical Role also saw the recent debut of a milestone project after the first season of The Legend of Vox Machina premiered its final three episodes one week before Elden Ring‘s launch. Originally conceived as a one-off animation special, the web series’ Kickstarter smashed records allowing the creators to expand the project into a series that was eventually picked up by Amazon Prime. Like Elden Ring, the reception of TheLegend of Vox Machina was overwhelmingly positive.

It is a good time to be a fantasy fan with entertainment like The Legend of Vox Machina and Elden Ring somehow surpassing already high expectations. There is an ever-growing desire for more diverse content within the genre and the success of both of these vastly different properties so close together underscores that want. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see what happens when the two ideas come together as Elden Ring gets its Critical Role spin.

Elden Ring is now available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.
