Those who hope to make it very far in this world have to stay on their toes.

CryoFall is definitely a difficult game, but those who know what they are getting into have a better chance of surviving than those who go in blind. Just by knowing what kinds of resources they should be stockpiling or what technologies to invest in first can give players an advantage over others. This guide shows beginners some strategies for surviving in the early hours of CryoFall.

CryoFall: Beginner Tips For Surviving

Collect As Much Wood, Stones, and Fiber As Possible – When it comes to resources, the first thing that players will want to do is focus on collecting as much wood, stones, and fiber as they possibly can. The vast majority of early game items will need to be crafted using these resources, and the player will find a use for these items for a very long time going forward. All of them are really easy to collect just by picking them up off the ground. Once the player has enough of these items they can also craft tools like the axe or pickaxe to begin collecting them more efficiently by chopping down trees or breaking apart large rocks. Players should always try to have a crate full of these simple resources whenever possible.

Use Quests To Build Up Learning Points – One of the most important aspects of CryoFall are the Learning Points that are used to research different types of technology in the game. Learning Points are acquired every time that the player completes simple tasks like cutting down trees, defeating an enemy in combat, or discovering a new item. If players really want to rack up a huge number of points though they should try to complete all of the quests that the game gives them. By completing a quest the player is rewarded with a certain number of points. These quests will ask the player to visit different areas of the map, construct certain items in the game, or even track down and hunt different animals. Not only is this a great way for players to earn points, but it will also show them how the game is played.

Settle Near Reliable Access to Resources – Like most survival games the player has the option of setting up their home base anywhere they want in the world, but settling down for the first time should be thought about very hard. When laying claim to land the player will want to survey the nearby area to determine if it a good area with reliable access to a number of different resources. The player will want to be somewhere where they can quickly acquire wood, water, food, and different kinds of ore. By setting up shop near these resources the player can ensure that they never have to travel very far in order to get their hands on any of the different resources that they need, which gives them more time to do more important things.

Focus On Industry and Cooking Upgrades First – It can be slightly overwhelming at first to see all of the different technology paths that the player is able to take and invest their points in. While there are no bad options for investing points in as they will all provide the player with decent items, it is a really good idea for the player to invest points in both Industry and Cooking over everything else. By investing in these technology sections the player is able to get their hands on better tools for harvesting resources around them and recipes that allow them to create nourishing food items. The odds are the player will wind up using the Cooking Stove and Furnace more than any other device in the game, so they should acquire them as quickly as possible.

Put Up Walls To Protect Yourself From Enemies – This tip mostly applies to those who are playing on PvP servers, but PvE players will get some use out of sturdy walls too. On PvP servers, other players are able to barge into a player’s home and take any items that they wish. By constructing walls and a door around the home base players can ensure that their nosy neighbors aren’t able to go snooping through their stuff. This also works as a great line of first defense against raiding parties of other players. Walls will also keep out normal animals and enemies as well, which helps new players avoid dying unnecessarily due to a pack of wolves wandering into their camp.

Don’t Hoard Non-Useful Perishable Items – While the majority of items the player will want to hoard and keep on hand for when they might need them later, it is pointless to do this with perishable items that the player doesn’t have a use for at the moment. All perishable items will turn into rot after a set amount of time, so having non-useful items taking up precious item space doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. While things like meat and eggs are great things to keep on hand for creating meals, players won’t want to hold onto those exotic fruits and veggies that they don’t currently have a recipe for yet. Either leave these items in the world or toss them in a mulchbox to turn them into fertilizer.

Always Be Creating Charcoal and Ash – One of the smartest things that players can do in the game early on is always be crafting Charcoal and Ash to be used. These are by far two of the most useful items in the early hours of the game. Charcoal is the best fuel source that the player can use early on because it is easy to make and burns much longer than normal wood or twigs. Ash on the other hand is used in the process of creating Raw Glass, which can then be used for making things like Glass Bottles for transporting liquids. Ash is a very rare resource early on in the game as there isn’t a way to craft it directly. Instead, it is a by-product of burning things in a campfire, stove, or furnace. One of the easiest ways to acquire both of these items simultaneously is to stick some Wood Logs in a campfire and then use Twigs as a fuel source. The player can then select the Charcoal recipe. This will turn the Wood Logs into Charcoal and the Twigs will be converted into Ash as they burn. It is the most efficient way to earn both resources

Don’t Waste Coal or Animal Fat – Once players get their hands on Coal they might think this is a better source of fuel to be used, but they would be sorely mistaken early on in the game. Coal is very difficult to find and is better used for crafting better fuel sources. This is the same with Animal Fat that is used to create Camp Fuel for oil-burning devices. Rather than wasting these items as fuel sources, the player will want to stockpile them for crafting other items. Coal is an essential part of crafting Firelogs, which are the most efficient combustible fuel source. Coal should always be used for this purpose if possible. Animal Fat on the other hand is less useful for fuel and instead is integral for creating Roasted Meat or Fried Eggs.

Invest in Ways to Preserve Food Longer – One of the most frustrating parts of the game is creating different kinds of food to eat only for them to go bad a few hours later without the player realizing it. This can put the player in a dire situation if they are starving and realize all of their food has rotted. What the player should do instead is try to invest in different ways to preserve their food for longer periods of time. The player can acquire the Primitive Fridge and Drying Cabinet pretty early on, and both of these devices are very useful for having food last much longer than it would originally.

Prioritize Copper Over Iron Early On – While both Iron and Copper are useful Ingots for the player to have in their possession, those who want to protect themselves should prioritize Copper over Iron early on in the game. Copper is useful in that it is a core aspect of crafting ammo for the majority of early game firearms like the bolt action rifle, shotgun, and several different pistols. Iron is great for creating the items themselves, but the only reason the player will need a large stockpile of the Ingot is for crafting Steel Ingots later on in the game.
