Modders have managed to restore cut quests and the original version of protagonist V to Cyberpunk 2077. The sci-fi role-playing game from CD Projekt Red was highly anticipated before release, but experienced a disastrous launch due to the game’s buggy and unpolished state. CD Projekt has committed to repairing the game through fixes and updates, hoping to bring the title closer to the developer’s original vision.

With gamers left disappointed due to Cyberpunk 2077‘s broken state upon release, a mod community was quickly established in an attempt to repair and improve the game. A lighting mod, titled Darker Lighting, was created by Nexus Mods user Inuktiplater in an attempt to improve the game’s atmosphere. Making the seedy sci-fi metropolis of Night City darker adds to the game’s ambience, and when paired with the numerous neon signs throughout the game the effect can be quite striking. Another mod for Cyberpunk 2077, created by Nexus Mods user Hineytroll, restores unused models for several of the game’s characters. Some of these alternate designs are quite similar to the characters’ final in-game appearance, as is the case with early game ally Jackie, while other characters such as Adam Smasher look nothing like the designs found in the finished product.

An article by Eurogamer reports that Cyberpunk 2077 modders have been able to restore several unused quests, as well as bring back early versions of V from the gameplay reveal at E3 2018. These Nexus Mods creations allow players to bring their version of the game closer to what was first shown off back in 2018. The Cut Gigs Save Game mod, created by romulus2k4, allows gamers to play through four “gig” side quests that were never implemented into the final version of the game. While two of these quests are glitchy, the other two are easily playable and have multiple outcomes depending on player actions. Meanwhile, a collection of different mods can be used to restore the E3 2018 version of V. E3 V and E3 Clothes work with the female version of V, while E3 V and E3 2018 Samurai Jacket can recreate the male version of the character.

While fans work to improve Cyberpunk 2077 and restore the game to its original vision, developer CD Projekt Red is also hard at work on improvements. The team recently put out Hotfix 1.2, a patch which has successfully fixed a number of serious bugs. Although the game is by no means completely fixed or adequately polished, each Hotfix patch is one small step toward delivering the game that fans were so feverishly anticipating last year.

The released version of Cyberpunk 2077 hardly resembles its pre-release gameplay and story trailers. While CD Projekt Red works to make the game playable, fans attempt to restore what they were shown before release. Time will tell what else these modders will be able to dredge up, or what Cyberpunk 2077 will look like by the end of 2021.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
