Despite news that the next Witcher game will utilize Unreal Engine 5, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077‘s future DLC will still be powered by the proprietary REDengine. The first Witcher installment ran on the BioWare-created Aurora Engine, which CDPR replaced with REDengine to develop 2011’s The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. An updated version of the technology, REDengine 2, fueled the vast open-world environments of The Witcher 3, with a third iteration of the engine coming online for sci-fi RPG Cyberpunk 2077.

The studio’s tried and true REDengine seemed a good match for Cyberpunk 2077 at first blush, but ultimately proved problematic in many respects. Notoriously, the title launched with widespread issues in late 2020, with even high-end PCs struggling to consistently provide a solid performance. While many of the performance and graphical hiccups have since been addressed, particularly in Cyberpunk 2077’s transformative 1.5 patch, some troubles continue to linger here and there. It makes sense, then, that CDPR would want to try out new technology while building the next chapter in its Witcher saga.

Following news about the new Witcher game running on Epic’s Unreal Engine 5, the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account noted the future DLC expansion for the sci-fi role-playing title will continue to utilize REDengine technology. This doesn’t come across as a huge revelation, per se, given that moving Cyberpunk 2077 DLC to a new engine would undoubtedly require a similar shift for the main game – an extensive amount of work even for the most tech-savvy development teams. The social media post in question reads as follows:

CD Projekt Red’s decision to ditch its own proprietary game engine after three major projects may come as a shock to most. However, someone at the studio clearly feels it serves as the best call for future Witcher and Cyberpunk endeavors. (Reason suggests whatever Cyberpunk titles come after the mysterious story expansion will run on Unreal Engine 5 like the fourth mainline Witcher installment.)

Of course, the biggest question mark currently hanging over Cyberpunk 2077 is what exactly the upcoming DLC will entail. Some of the endings could use further exploration; a few side quests would benefit from additional hours of content, as well. And Jackie Welles’ story arc is practically begging for its own narrative-based expansion. At the time of writing, though, the crew at CD Projekt Red hasn’t so much as teased what it has in store for Cyberpunk 2077’s long-awaited DLC. There’s also no word on when official details will begin making the rounds, either.

Cyberpunk 2077 is playable on Google Stadia, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
