CD Projekt Red’s ambitious science-fiction action RPG Cyberpunk 2077 has just gotten its first update of 2022, albeit without any fanfare from the studio. This update comes ahead of Cyberpunk‘s next-gen upgrade, which still has no concrete release date.

Cyberpunk 2077‘s legacy is one fraught with controversy; the historically messy launch of the game resulted in countless refund requests, scathing critiques from its consumer base, and even its removal from the PlayStation Store, to which it did not return until more than six months later. Most of the issues players had with Cyberpunk stemmed from its glitchiness and poor performance on last-gen consoles, along with the game’s cut content. The negative publicity surrounding Cyberpunk was exacerbated by the fact that CD Projekt Red appeared to be aware of the game’s problems, not allowing review outlets to show footage from console builds of the game. All of this controversy culminated in a lawsuit against CD Projekt Red, after which the Polish developer had to pay a sum of just under $2,000,000 to its investors. Admittedly, the studio has managed to fix many of the game’s issues throughout all this turmoil, but many fans still feel there is a long way to go.

CD Projekt Red certainly hasn’t given up on Cyberpunk, as evidenced by a recent patch noticed by Reddit user *ssCrack_42069. This patch, which will be the first that Cyberpunk has seen since October, was added to the Steam Database on January 14 without any major announcement from CD Projekt Red. It should be noted that the build is non-public, so its contents are unknown for now.

This silent update is notable for two reasons: it is the first update to the game – which is still crammed with bugs – in months, and it is the first update to the game in the new year. An earlier statement from CD Projekt Red indicated that next-gen Cyberpunk 2077 would be released in the first quarter of 2022, so many fans are likely hoping for a more substantial patch to build hype for the upcoming upgrade. At the time of writing, no specific details about his patch have been made public.

It’s easy for speculation to run wild upon hearing this news: Cyberpunk 2077 suffered majorly, for many players, due to its heaps of cut content such as car customization and wall-running, so a patch that reintroduced some of these removals would likely be welcome. However, Cyberpunk 2077 fans should keep in mind that CD Projekt Red would likely want as much excitement as possible behind any major update, so the studio’s silence indicates that this patch is more likely focused on something more mundane like stabilizing performance.

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
