Singer and actress Demi Lovato is sharing her recovery story in the Demi Lovato: Dancing With The Devil documentary, and we’ve gathered facts about her life from 2018 to 2020. The documentary is airing ahead of the release of her 7th album. In her YouTube documentary series, she opens up about living with drug abuse and eating disorders. She also talks about being the victim of a sexual assault. From 2018 to 2020, Demi stepped away from the spotlight. She needed time to heal from her trauma. Now, she is sharing her story with her family, friends, and fans.

On July 24, 2018, Demi overdosed and nearly died. She received medical help after being found by her assistant Jordan. Her relapse occurred in the midst of her “Tell Me You Love Me” World Tour, shortly after she had celebrated 6 years of sobriety. One day before the incident, she performed at a concert. This overdose caused three strokes and a heart attack, which led to brain damage and vision problems. In fact, she was legally blind when she came to after the overdose, and couldn’t see her sister at her bedside. Since then, Demi has been on an emotional and vulnerable journey. She’s working on herself and telling her story to help others.

After receiving treatment post-overdose, Demi signed with manager Scooter Braun in 2019. This followed a falling out with Phil McIntyre, who had managed her for over a decade. In her documentary, Demi noted that she was concerned that people would not want to work with her after her overdose. She felt they would consider her a liability. Scooter mentioned that he was overwhelmed at the time, and had every intention of recommending somebody else to manage Demi. However, after he met her, he knew he had to sign her. They continue to work together as Demi is releasing new music. See a much-younger Demi in her beauty pageant days below:

In January 2020, at the 62nd annual Grammy Awards, Demi took the stage for the first time since her overdose. She gave an emotional performance of her new song, “Anyone.” The next month, she performed the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. Shortly after, the world was put into quarantine, and Demi focused on unpacking all of her unhealed traumas. That was when she decided she was comfortable enough to film a documentary about the last two years of her life. See part of the documentary below:

Also in 2020, Demi found love with actor Max Ehrich. The couple fell hard and fast as they found themselves quarantining together shortly after starting their relationship. Just four months later, the couple got engaged and continued their loving relationship. Two months after their engagement, the couple broke it off. They decided to focus on themselves and their respective careers. While it was the best decision for them, the breakup was hard to go through, and Demi alludes to that in her new music. Her new song, “15 Minutes,” is believed to be about Ehrich, and it is not complimentary.

Demi used her time in quarantine to identify and confront her traumas, with the support of her mother Dianna, and the help of other family members and friends. She also prepared to grab the spotlight again. She’s put a lot of work into becoming a better version of herself while staying true to who she is. In addition to episodes of her documentary series, Demi has shared her album, Dancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over. Her music video for “Dancing With The Devil” reenacts the night of her overdose. The final episodes of Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil will be released on April 6.
