The 2020 season of Dancing With the Stars is in full swing—pun intended—and many viewers remain curious about how they can cast their vote, especially since the voting rules recently changed during season 28.

In seasons prior to 2019, votes and scores were combined to send a dance team home with zero input from the judges. This often led to talented dancers being sent home early in the competition. The entire voting and scoring systems were revised to address these issues. Of course, fans were excited about this change. However, they weren’t – and still aren’t – too happy about others. The change included the elimination of post-show voting, meaning all voting happens live. Essentially, all those who don’t watch live aren’t able to vote. This includes those in the Mountain and Pacific time zones. Fans are concerned this has turned the show into even more of a popularity contest than it was before.

This year is no different. Dancing With the Stars has pretty much kept up with the changes they made last season. The live broadcast votes will be combined with the judges’ scores. The couples with the lowest combo of votes and scores will be up for elimination. According to ABC, “Voting begins on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 at 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT where your votes will help determine which couples will continue dancing in the competition. This vote will be online at ABC.com and by SMS text. Both methods of voting will end during the last commercial break of the live ET/CT broadcast, shortly after all couples have danced.

Voting begins every week at the start of the show and is only open during the live broadcast in the Eastern and Central time zones. It’s not available during Mountain, Pacific, Alaska, or Hawaii time zone broadcasts, meaning a ton of the American population will not have a chance to watch the episode before they cast their ballot. Plus, they’ll have to remember to go online or text the correct number during broadcast times if they want to vote.

So how do you vote during this live broadcast if you’re able? You can either vote by SMS text if you have a US wireless carrier and are in the US or Puerto Rico. You can also vote through ABC.com if you’re 18 years or older and located in the US or Puerto Rico. Fans can submit up to 10 votes per couple per voting method for a total of 20 votes per couple across SMS text and online. You can vote for multiple couples and voting online allows you to reallocate votes during open voting. When texting your vote in, it’s the first name of the celebrity to 21523. For example, if you’re looking to vote for Nev Schulman of Catfish, you would text NEV to 21523.

Dancing With The Stars 2020 airs Mondays at 8 pm ET on ABC.
