Weird Al Yankovic has shared the first official image from the biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, which has Daniel Radcliffe playing the famed comedic musician. Yankovic has made a career of parodying big-name musicians, such as Michael Jackson, Eminem, and Nirvana, often aping their music videos to hilarious effect, while churning out a number of albums in the process. Yankovic’s last (and seemingly final) album, “Mandatory Fun” won Best Comedy Album at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. He is also a well-known voice actor, who has worked on projects such as Pete the Cat, American Dad!, Bojack Horseman, and more.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Yankovic shared the first official Weird: The Al Yankovic Story image of Radcliffe in full costume and playing the accordion, noting that it was day 8 of the shoot for the new film. In perfect Yankovic form, the comedian says that a “cosplayer weirdo” (Radcliffe) showed up to crash the set of the new film. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is a Roku Channel original, which is being directed by Eric Appel (Die Hart, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and is written by both Yankovic and Appel. The film is said to explore “a truly unbelievable journey through Yankovic’s life and career, from gifted child prodigy to the greatest musical legend of all time.” Take a look at the Weird: The Al Yankovic Story image of Radcliffe below:

Interestingly, Appel directed the live-action short of Weird: The Al Yankovic Story in 2010, which was a fictional biography of Weird Al that parodied other similar musical biographies. The short version starred Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul as Weird Al and co-starred the likes of Olivia Wilde (as Madonna), Gary Cole and Mary Steenburgen as Weird Al’s parents, and Patton Oswalt as Dr. Demento. It’s been 33 years since Yankovic’s first feature film, UHF, was released and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is sure to have a similar parody theme in place, if the short (let alone all of Yankovic’s career) is any indication.

Radcliffe has had an interesting run of roles since his Harry Potter days and he continues to find new, strange, and off-kilter roles that distance himself from the iconic part. With chatter of a new Harry Potter show in the works at HBO Max and the actor being more than a decade away from the franchise at this point, there’s room to explore what a return to that character might be, but it’s smart for Radcliffe to keep changing it up as he progresses. Radcliffe has shown a penchant for comedic and “weird” roles thus far, so it makes perfect sense that something like Weird: The Al Yankovic Story would appeal to the actor, which he’s sure to milk for all the comedy gold that can be mustered.
