Warning! This article contains spoilers for Avengers #53

In a new issue of Avengers, Marvel Comics just introduced Doctor Doom’s most powerful variant, the Doom Above All, but even with all of his power, Daredevil has proven that he is immune to Doom’s strongest attack for one hilarious reason. The Doom Above All is a dark sorcerer who can wipe out entire planets in an instant and kill even the most powerful of cosmic beings with a simple glance. However, Daredevil has a key attribute that makes him invulnerable to one of Doom’s attacks that is strong enough to take down Galactus.

In Avengers #53 by Jason Aaron and Juan Frigeri, Doom Above All travels across the multiverse to Earth-616 with a number of other villains who are working to kill every version of the Avengers in every conceivable universe. As Doom is taking down the Avengers’ Celestial corpse base, the specifics behind his powers are described to readers. One ability held by this Doom variant is his ability to make those who look upon his real face fall into shrieking madness, a nearly limitless ability to that work on even the most cosmically powerful beings like Galactus. However, while it may be able to take down a being who regularly devours entire worlds, Doom’s power would do nothing to the protector of Hell’s Kitchen.

The mentally-debilitating power held by Doom Above All’s real face only works on those who meet two specific requirements. As this issue of the Avengers specifies, “Behind that mask, his scars are such a hellish sight that to look upon them brings shrieking madness to anything with eyes and a living soul.” While Daredevil certainly has a soul, what he does not have are two functional eyes as he sees the world through the collective vision offered to him by his other heightened senses. Because Daredevil does not meet one of these requirements, Doom Above All would not be able to use his most gruesome power against him as it would have absolutely no effect, which is absolutely hilarious as Doom Above All can take down literal space gods but can’t use his most terrifying attack on a street level hero because of a technicality.

While Daredevil is safe from the maddening sight of Doctor Doom’s face, he is far from immune to the other vastly powerful abilities held by the variant. The spells Doom Above All casts pull energy from lifeforms across the cosmos, with some of his most powerful spells draining all life from a whole planet. The attacks Doom can conjure are endless and the power needed to fuel those spells is limitless. So, while Daredevil wouldn’t lose his mind at the sight of Doom’s face, he would absolutely be obliterated by Doom Above All in countless other ways.

Even though Doom Above All is way more powerful than Daredevil, his successful attack on the Avengers proves that the team needs all the help they can get while fighting these multiversal threats. While Daredevil has only proven himself immune to one specific attack, that could be a game changer when the Avengers have their final showdown against the attackers if the Man Without Fear were to be recruited by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as he has been many times in the past. Whether or not Daredevil fights alongside the Avengers or even comes face-to-face with Doom Above All on his own, it has still been established based on the rules of that specific power that Doctor Doom’s most terrifying attack would have no impact on Daredevil whatsoever.
