Marvel Studios has no excuses to not make Daredevil season 4 now, but there are still doubts over whether the show will actually continue. The Netflix original series reached a surprising conclusion in 2018 when it was confirmed that Daredevil was being canceled along with all of the streaming service’s other Marvel content. This announcement came after season 3 was another critical hit and directly set up the events that would occur if Daredevil season 4 happened. The show has had no future for the last few years as a result, but now Disney and Marvel Studios are in the perfect position to continue the beloved series.

Ever since Daredevil season 3 was canceled, some have continued to hold out hope that the show could be revived in some fashion. Although speculation suggested Disney+ or Hulu could become the home for a hypothetical fourth season, Disney and Marvel had to wait a few years to figure out their plan either way. Based on the deal Marvel struck with Netflix, the characters involved in the shows would not be able to be used for two full years from the date the show was canceled. It’s now been announced that Daredevil and the other Marvel Netflix shows are moving to Disney+ in March 2022. This comes after Netflix’s licensing deal for the shows expired and as part of Disney+’s move to bring more adult content to what has so far been a very family-friendly streaming service.

The Marvel Netflix shows moving to Disney+ permanently has renewed interest in Daredevil season 4 happening. Marvel Studios and Disney+ haven’t made any announcements about the possibility of continuing the series or any other Defenders shows. However, the shows coming to Disney+ means Marvel has no reason to not make Daredevil season 4 now. Here’s how likely a Daredevil season 4 may actually be.

Marvel Has Removed All The Obstacles To Daredevil Season 4

Disney+ becoming the home for Daredevil eliminates the last major roadblock when it came to discussing the possibility of season 4 happening. It was previously argued that even if Marvel Studios was legally allowed to continue this story, it would opt against season 4 so Disney+ wouldn’t be promoting Daredevil for Netflix. Once it was revealed Netflix didn’t own these shows forever and the rights were reverting to Disney’s control, the door became open for them to move to Hulu or Disney+. Either option would’ve given Marvel the opportunity to continue the series, but Disney+ changing its settings to allow mature content like Daredevil is a big deal. It shows that the streaming service will become a place to house and create content for adults, which could include Daredevil season 4 now.

Marvel Studios might already have started showing their intent to continue Daredevil by bringing back a few characters in Phase 4. Charlie Cox made his highly-anticipated return as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home to serve as Peter Parker’s lawyer. Although he didn’t suit up as Daredevil for this brief role, there is an expectation that Marvel has big plans for the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen and future appearances. Phase 4 also saw the return of Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk a.k.a. Kingpin in Hawkeye. The actor has said that the character is the same version he played on Netflix for three seasons. Marvel Studios hasn’t confirmed that Daredevil and the other Marvel Netflix shows are officially considered part of the MCU canon, though.

The continuity between the Marvel Netflix shows and MCU movies is arguably the only obstacle still facing Daredevil season 4. While the shows generally work in the larger scope of the MCU timeline, there are inconsistencies and minor details that don’t line up. This could be something Marvel Studios is willing to overlook, though, in order to keep Daredevil going with another season. Even Marvel’s movies have small canon issues, but Daredevil season 4 could go a long way in confirming the Defenders universe’s place in the MCU canon and that this backstory applies to the versions of Daredevil and Kingpin recently re-introduced.

Why Marvel Should Make Daredevil Season 4

Now that Marvel Studios has the opportunity to make Daredevil season 4, there are a lot of reasons in favor of the hit show continuing. For starters, the series is still incredibly popular. Fans have been campaigning to #SaveDaredevil for the last few years as a way to show their continued interest in seeing more of the series. It also found another boost in popularity thanks to Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye utilizing its characters. Marvel could capitalize on this excitement by making Daredevil season 4 at long last, which would also bring more attention to the new batch of shows streaming on Disney+.

Marvel making Daredevil season 4 would also give the show a chance to continue and end on its own terms. Netflix’s cancelation came as a huge surprise to those involved with the show, as the Daredevil season 3 finale teased where the story can go next. Matt Murdock reformed his partnership with Foggy Nelson and brought Karen Page aboard as a true partner, forming Nelson, Murdock & Page. While Kingpin was arrested and agreed to keep Daredevil’s identity a secret, Daredevil season 3’s ending also included the tease of Benjamin Poindexter transforming into Bullseye. Daredevil season 4 needs to happen to show what happened with these stories.

Importantly, the potential fourth season could also give audiences the Daredevil MCU show many wanted it to become. The adult nature of its content could remain and help the MCU expand the type of content it creates. Furthermore, a Daredevil season 4 made by Marvel Studios could mean that character crossovers and stronger MCU ties could occur. Instead of the show having to dance around what happened in the movies, a fourth season can actually be made by those in the know about where the MCU is heading. It would also surely come with a bigger budget, which could mean better uses of Daredevil’s powers and acrobatic abilities.

Will Marvel Make Daredevil Season 4?

It might seem like an obvious decision on the outside for Marvel to make Daredevil season 4, but there is no official word on what will happen next. A firm decision on the matter could depend on how well the show performs on Disney+. As audiences wait to see if Marvel does make Daredevil season 4, the good news is that plenty of people involved with the show are ready to return if need be. Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio are already primed for a return after their MCU appearances. Season 3’s showrunner Erik Oleson already had a full pitch for what season 4 could hold, and while the details might have to change after the passage of time, Marvel Studios could save a lot of time by using elements of those scripts.

There is still no guarantee that Daredevil season 4 happens, though, as Marvel Studios could go in a completely different direction. Instead of continuing Daredevil on Disney+, Marvel could be happy using Daredevil, Kingpin, and other characters from the Defenders shows in other MCU properties instead. With properties like She-Hulk and Echo rumored to include more stars from the Marvel Netflix shows, this might just be Marvel’s ultimate plan. The studio might also prefer giving Daredevil a movie instead of season 4, which could have to blur the line between being a continuation of Netflix’s story and a soft reboot for the MCU’s future.
