As one of the universe’s most dangerous antagonists, Darkseid has always topped the list of DC’s most powerful villains. And now thanks to the arrival of Dark Nights: Death Metal #4, the dark lord of Apokolips has a new look that is just as metal as the comic event.

Of course, even before this new makeover, Darkseid has never been known for having a particularly approachable demeanor. His aesthetic ranges from crazed alien conqueror to his Marvel competition, Thanos. It isn’t just any supervillain who can claim to make every single member of the Justice League think twice about throwing a punch, but somehow, the storytellers at DC have found a way to make him even more daunting. And possibly even… cooler?

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Dark Nights: Death Metal is the latest story built upon the foundations of 2017’s Dark Nights: Metal, where readers were first introduced to the Dark Multiverse and a variety of twisted alternate universe villains. The new Death Metal continues the DC story forward, diving deeper into the darkness and exhuming some interesting characters along the way. The presence of Darkseid in Dark Nights: Death Metal has been a somewhat absent one, instead of leaving a Darkseid version of Batman to carry the torch (and army) of Apokolips. The hybrid antagonist has become known as the Darkfather, taking the strongest components of both contrasting characters to form a terrifying fusion. But the real terror has arrived in a new variant cover featuring Darkseid in all his rage-filled, metal-makeover glory.

The image, illustrated by David Finch features a tusked, well-armored model of the character. The animalistic, otherworldly persona perfectly portrays Darkseid’s evil nature. He also looks like a cross between Darkseid and Doomsday. The cover was a perfect tease of this upcoming issue for fans of Darkseid who are ready to see him in a new, darker light. Many fans are enthusiastic about the joint forces of Darkseid and the infamous Superboy-Prime. The two received equal attention on their variant covers, with demeanors that compliment each other perfectly. Both are here to stir up some chaos. The visual of glowing red eyes donned by both villains shows readers that the two are out for blood.

The rock style of the Death Metal series continues to impress in the redesign of many popular characters. Without changing traditional appearances too much, the variant covers released thus far go the extra mile in showing the darkest sides of both heroes and villains alike. The future role Darkseid will come to hold is still up in the air. If this intimidating, theatric makeover indicates any events to come, one can feel safe in assuming the Justice League has their work cut out for them.
