In the Nubia-starring story by L.L. McKinney, Alitha Martinez, Mark Morales, Emilio Lopez, and Becca Carrey, in this week’s Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman, the comic opens with Grail attempting to steal artifacts from a museum. Just as she’s about to kill a security guard whose life she lied about pretending to spare, Nubia appears just in the nick of time. The two exchange a series of blows, as Grail questions why Nubia remains after Amazonian forces were recalled from a man’s world. Nubia tells her it’s so that people like Grail couldn’t take advantage of the situation.

After Wonder Woman gets a hold of the artifact Grail was attempting to steal, it gives her visions of war, but simultaneously gives a protective aura that prevents Nubia from being harmed. Grail departs vowing that her “desires will have to wait. For now.” So, what is Grail after? As Nubia’s Aunt Gracy later explains, the artifact she held is one of nine pieces of a key that can open doors to ancient evils from alternate realities. The bad news is Grail seems to already have eight of the pieces she needs.
