There is no villain who hates the heroes of DC’s Universe more passionately than Darkseid. But now, fans no longer need wonder how the villain would celebrate an actual victory. If Darkseid ruled the universe, he would build his throne out of the the vanquished Justice League. You can’t say the Lord of Apokolips lacks a sense of humor.

Fans shouldn’t be worried that the entire universe has actually fallen to Darkseid–at least, not the main continuity of DC’s prime reality. Despite the Multiverse-spanning plot of the current Dark Nights: Death Metal event, the core storyline has stayed specifically on the heroes and Earth every comic fan knows. As the planet (and universe containing it) has fallen to the combined power of Perpetua and The Batman Who Laughs, the Justice League has seen their darkest nightmares brought to life. And no nightmare is darker than beholding the version of Darkseid who ascended the throne to become the ruler of DC’s Universe.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The scene arrives thanks to DC’s official preview of Dark Nights: Death Metal #4, picking up right where things left off in the shocking cliffhanger ending to Dark Nights: Death Metal Trinity Crisis #1. To put it simply, the heroes of the Justice League have found their ‘Hail Mary’ play: split up to revisit the three greatest ‘Crisis’ events in DC’s history, and bring back the ‘Crisis Energy’ from each glorious victory. Sadly, things don’t go as planned. For Superman (having recently escaped from being tortured by the Batman who became Darkseid in another universe), that means coming face to face with Darkseid on his mission to reshape the universe in the Final Crisis event.

Only this time, things went differently. This is no longer the universe where Final Crisis ended in his death… this is the dark reality where Darkseid won. And decided to celebrate his victory over Earth’s heroes in style. Take a look at the official preview page:

For those unfamiliar, the Final Crisis event was the result of the death of the New Gods, slain by the all-powerful Source that created them–and Darkseid’s clever plan to use physical death to be reincarnated on Earth in human form. His mission was to spread the Anti-Life Equation across Earth and, eventually, the universe. The heroes succeeded in stopping the Crisis, with an army of alternate versions of Superman delivering the finishing blows. But things weren’t destined to go so well in every reality.

Despite the fact that Darkseid’s Death Metal makeover was previously revealed in the official cover art for the issue, there is no understating the sight of Kingdom Come Superman, the Superman of Red Son, and the Justice Lord Superman doing Darkseid’s bidding. Now victims to the Anti-Life Equation, these Men of Steel force Superman to witness his friends and fellowe heroes subjugated to physically forming Darkseid’s throne. The imagination runs wild at what other humiliations may lie in store for the rest of DC’s heroes in the ensuing pages, not to mention the failed Crisis events Wonder Woman and Batman have landed themselves in. But until then, readers can dream, and take in the official solicitation details below.
