While Darth Maul was one of the most fearsome Sith Lords in the Star Wars galaxy before his fall from grace, he once received a vision from the Force where he became a Jedi Knight. Despite his hunger for killing Jedi and to please his master Darth Sidious, Maul was shown a version of himself he found to be grotesque and repulsive: that of a heroic warrior of the light side of the Force. Serving as a defining moment on the same level as Luke Skywalker’s vision in the caves of Dagobah, Darth Maul’s surreal time as a Jedi would serve to cement his beliefs that the Jedi Order had to be exterminated at all costs.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Featured in Marvel Comics’ Age of Republic: Darth Maul #1 from writer Jody Houser and Luke Ross, Maul is seen in the days before The Phantom Menace incredibly restless. While he wants to kill all of the Jedi he can get his hands on, his master’s plans are not yet ready for Maul to strike so openly to satiate his bloodlust. Instead, Maul had been seeking out those in the underbelly of Coruscant who were Force-sensitive but were never found by the Jedi Order, killing them as a consolation for his inability to kill the Jedi themselves. However, even that could draw the attention of the Jedi, motivating Sidious to take his apprentice to Moraband, a dark Sith world where many dark side warriors were slain by the Jedi centuries ago.

Upon their arrival, Sidious sought to continue Maul’s training by forcing him to breathe in the ashes of the fallen Sith who were no more than husks. As a result, Maul was shocked to find himself dressed in Jedi robes, wielding a double-bladed lightsaber that was blue instead of the usual sinister crimson. Not only that, but he was asked to defeat a monster terrorizing a village, seeing as how he was such a great hero of the Jedi Order. While Maul kills the monster and was invited into the villagers’ homes who adored him, he realized what he believed to be the Jedi’s greatest lie to the galaxy: the notion that they are worthy of being worshipped.

Upon his realization that the Jedi have far greater numbers than the Sith along with the great support of the Republic, Maul now understands that he can’t simply slaughter the Jedi in a blind rage. Defeating the Jedi Order will require cunning and tactful planning, using sinister designs his master has painstakingly put into motion over the span of years. That being said, Maul still slaughters the villagers he saw in his vision seemingly as a means to prove that the Jedi are unworthy of any kind of praise (if only to himself).

Despite being no more than a vision, it’s still quite striking to see Maul as a Jedi Knight (even if he still commits atrocities as a Sith Lord would). While this was a defining moment for Darth Maul where he learned to temper his rage and bloodlust, the irony is that he would never fulfill his dream of ruling by his master’s side and killing all the Jedi in the Star Wars galaxy. This was due to his multiple defeats at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi and subsequent rejection by Sidious, and the role meant for him would, of course, go to Anakin Skywalker after his corruption into Darth Vader.
