Darth Vader’s return in Obi-Wan Kenobi is revealed with a new image from the Star Wars series offering the first look at the iconic villain. Hayden Christensen is reprising his role of former Jedi Padawan-turned-Sith Lord Anakin Skywalker for the new show after portraying the character in the latter two installments of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Alongside Christensen, Obi-Wan Kenobi will see the returns of fellow prequel stars Ewan McGregor in the titular role, Joel Edgerton as Owen Lars, and Bonnie Piesse as Beru Whitesun Lars.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will also mark the Star Wars franchise debuts of Rupert Friend as The Grand Inquisitor, Moses Ingram as The Third Sister Reva, Sung Kang as The Fifth Brother, Indira Varma, Kumail Nanjiani, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Simone Kessell, Benny Safdie, Maya Erskine, and Rory Ross. The series picks up a decade after the events of Revenge of the Sith as Obi-Wan continues watching over a young Luke Skywalker on Tatooine while grappling with the downfall of the Jedi Order at the hands of Emperor Palpatine. As time draws nearer for Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s premiere, audiences are getting an exciting new look at a fan-favorite character’s return.

On the heels of the first trailer’s arrival for the series, Entertainment Weekly has unveiled the first look at Darth Vader’s return in a new Obi-Wan Kenobi image. The first look at Vader’s return in Obi-Wan Kenobi is an exciting reveal for longtime Star Wars fans but also raises a few interesting questions. When Christensen was first announced to be returning for the series, it was reported he would be playing Anakin Skywalker, which proved to be an interesting notion given the show is set after his transformation into the powerful Sith Lord. However, concept art revealed in a sizzle reel for Obi-Wan Kenobi teased a rematch between McGregor’s Jedi and Darth Vader, leaving many to wonder if Christensen would be portraying both versions of the character.

Even if Christensen doesn’t appear as Anakin in Obi-Wan Kenobi, the door isn’t completely closed for the Golden Globe nominee to reprise his role as the corrupted Jedi. Christensen is confirmed to also be returning for the Rosario Dawson-led Ahsoka and with the equally close relationship between the former Jedi Padawan and Anakin as he and Obi-Wan, the later Star Wars series could include flashbacks or hallucinations of Anakin pre-transformation. Only time will tell what the future holds when Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres on Disney+ on May 25.
