Hayden Christensen teases “a very powerful Vader” in Obi-Wan Kenobi. After years of rumors and endless speculation, Ewan McGregor’s return as the iconic Jedi Master was finally confirmed in 2019. Though the original intent was to make a feature film, the Obi-Wan spinoff idea was reworked into a Disney+ series following the box office disappointment of Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018. Soon after, the return of Obi-Wan’s former Padawan-turned-Sith Lord Anakin Skywalker was also confirmed, portrayed by the prequel trilogy actor.

Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse are two more familiar faces from the prequel trilogy that will return in the show as Owen and Beru Lars. Other than those four, Obi-Wan is set to introduce a ton of new characters to a galaxy far, far away. The series marks the franchise debuts of Rupert Friend, Moses Ingram, and Sung Kang as inquisitors, and Indira Varma as an Imperial officer. Written by Army of the Dead‘s Joby Harold and directed by The Mandalorian‘s Deborah Chow, Obi-Wan picks up 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith as the exiled Jedi watches over a young Luke Skywalker on the Lars Homestead before taking the titular character on a “rollicking adventure” and it sounds like Vader has spent that time recovering from his injuries and accumulating strength.

Speaking to EW for the recent Darth Vader reveal, Christensen shared some alluring teases about what to expect from his character in the Obi-Wan show. While he wasn’t able to reveal whether or not Darth Vader will remove his helmet, he did say straightforwardly that the Sith Lord will be “very powerful” in the show. “We’re going to see a very powerful Vader,” Christensen promises.

The upcoming series is expected to help fill the gap of time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, in between Obi-Wan and Anakin’s epic duel on Mustafar and their fateful encounter on the Death Star. It’s unclear exactly how powerful Vader will be during this time, though the answer is probably a little more than when he was last seen in Episode III, but less than the original trilogy movies. Vader wasn’t seen in the trailer, though he was revealed in an Obi-Wan first-look photo.

As usual, Lucasfilm is keeping their cards close to the chest, so much about Christensen’s involvement as Anakin/Vader is still unclear. While he will undoubtedly play a role as an antagonist, the show’s primary villains appear to be the several inquisitors who attempt to hunt Obi-Wan down on Tatooine. Only time will reveal the full extent of Vader’s role in Obi-Wan Kenobi when it premieres on May 25.
