A new fan poster for Obi-Wan Kenobi has hit the web showing Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) mourning Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman). The upcoming series will catch up with Ewan McGregor’s titular Jedi ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith. The Disney+ series is scheduled to drop on May 25.

One of the most exciting reveals about Obi-Wan Kenobi was the announcement that Darth Vader would play a significant part in the overarching story. Moreover, the series will see Hayden Christensen return to the role for the first time and see him share the screen with McGregor’s Obi-Wan for the first time since 2005. Though the initial plan was reportedly for Darth Maul to play a villainous role in Obi-Wan Kenobi, rumors have surfaced suggesting that the creatives behind the scenes opted to bring back Christensen as Vader and allow for a “rematch” between the former master and apprentice. Beyond that, however, very little is known about how Vader will factor into the plot of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

With the release of Obi-Wan Kenobi around the corner, excitement for the Disney+ series is at an all-time high. In fact, artist Jordan Geiger recently took to Instagram with a fan poster for the upcoming series, which shows Darth Vader mourning Padme Amidala in private. Check out the image below.

Anakin Skywalker’s path to becoming Darth Vader is littered with tragedies and heartbreaks, from the death of Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) to his inability to save his mother, Shmi (Pernilla August), from dying in Attack of the Clones. However, it is his fear of losing Padme in Revenge of the Sith that ultimately leads him to become a Sith Lord, and in a cruel twist of irony, his descent to the Dark Side is ultimately what kills her while giving birth to Luke and Leia. This is directly called out in the caption to the poster, as Vader continues to lament what he has done to the woman he loved years after her death.

It would arguably make quite a bit of sense for a moment like this to occur in Obi-Wan Kenobi, as it would honor Vader’s backstory and flesh out the mindset of the villain during his time under the helmet – something only briefly explored in the original trilogy. Padme’s death is the moment that solidifies Darth Vader’s fall to the Dark Side, and expanded Star Wars media has often shown him mourning her when not serving The Empire. Moreover, as some fans are hoping to see Liam Neeson cameo as a Force Ghost appearing before Obi-Wan in the series, it would make for an exciting duality to Vader mourning his own lost loved one in his private time.
