The time has come for Darth Vader to find out just what happened to his lost love, and his search for answers has brought him to the tomb of Padmé Amidala on the planet Naboo. It’s a reunion fans have waited to see for years, but what Vader finds among her remains is a clue to not only the birth of his son… but his daughter, too.

This twist is only the latest to be tackled in the realm of Marvel’s Star Wars comics, adding what would seem to be an essential chapter of the saga to canon (after the films themselves chose not to explore the same stories). With the newest range of comics set directly in the wake of The Empire Strikes Back, there is just one moment on the mind of Darth Vader: the rejection of his son, Luke Skywalker. A son who, according to the version of events explained to him by Emperor Palpatine, died along with his wife. So it only makes sense that in the upcoming Darth Vader #5, the Sith Lord solves this mystery by seeing the remains of Padmé with his own two eyes. At least, that was his original plan.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Those who have been reading the Darth Vader series from Greg Pak Raffaele Ienco already know how quickly Vader’s investigation became positively crowded with intrigue. As if a possible return of Padmé Amidala didn’t spin enough theories on its own, the story only grew more complicated when the resurrected senator was revealed to be Padmé’s handmaiden Sabé, still alive after so many years. Alive and, as Vader soon discovered himself, just as curious to know the truth about her queen’s mysterious death. But after luring Vader to the ‘tomb’ he sought and failing to ambush him in a trap, Sabé put her life on the line to keep the Sith Lord from reaching the true resting place of Padmé.

But you can’t deny the will of a Sith Lord. Now StarWars.com has the exclusive preview of the upcoming Darth Vader #5, picking up precisely where the previous issue left off. Darth Vader has entered the tomb of Anakin Skywalker’s greatest love, and mother to his children. But even Vader isn’t prepared for his own reaction–or the clue he’ll receive, pointing him straight to the only evidence of Anakin and Padmé’s twins, Luke and Leia. Read on below for the full preview.

With the Star Wars prequel movies known to every fan, it doesn’t take much more than flashing Anakin’s happiest memories with Padmé–juxtaposed with his very last, strangling the life from her–to know the storm of emotion rising within the character. And after reuniting with other Star Wars prequel characters on this same return to Naboo, suffice to say Vader is at his most unsettled in years. In fact, his failure to open Padmé’s sarcophagus threatens to overshadow the clue offered up by his droid’s scan. A medical implant left behind in Padmé prior to her burial, during the delivery of her twins. And a medical implant that has now given Vader his next lead: Polis Massa, the planetoid upon which Leia and Luke Skywalker were born.

The final pages of Vader sparing the life of Sabé might seem like mercy, but those who know Vader know his moments of sentimentality are typically erased by dark side brutality. On the one hand, Sabé and Vader both want to know what medical procedure Padmé endured before her death. But on the other, Vader’s request that Sabé bring the rest of her Padmé-loyal movement dubbed Amidalans to that same location can’t be good. The only question is… how much of the truth will Vader extract? The birth of his son, or the birth of his twins? Time will tell, when the full issue arrives on September 16th.
