If the Dragon Ball franchise featured a second Tournament of Power, who would be on the Universe 7 team? In Dragon Ball Super, Goku and his allies had to compete in three competitions between universes. Though the one with the highest stakes is now behind them, the anime never did close the door on more tournaments.

Goku’s team beating Universe 11’s Jiren doesn’t mean that the Z-Warriors have faced the strongest fighters Dragon Ball Super’s multiverse has to offer. After all, four universes were exempt from competing. At some point in the future, Grand Zeno could decide to test Goku’s mettle against the champions of Universe 1, Universe 5, Universe 8, and Universe 1. Defeated fighters from the last competition could end up getting second chances as well. How the first Tournament of Power worked out could motivate the anime to move in this direction. Goku being forced to put together a ten-person team allowed the anime to showcase a much wider range of heroes than usual.

If Goku did have to make a new Universe 7 team, chances are it wouldn’t be identical to the first roster. Last time, he brought in Vegeta, Gohan, Frieza, Android 17, Android 18, Piccolo, Master Roshi, Tien, and Krillin. Based on evolving power levels and other recent developments, some may not return. For that reason, Goku may have to replace a few with other Dragon Ball characters. Assuming that Zeno keeps the ten-person requirement, here’s who might be on Universe 7’s next team.

Goku

After everything that happened during Dragon Ball Super’s final saga, Goku would be naturally excited for a second Tournament of Power. He struggled mightily against Jiren throughout the competition and didn’t become strong enough to overpower him until the final minutes when he achieved the completed Ultra Instinct form. If Goku were to master it ahead of the next tournament, he’d surely be thrilled to test his new power level against Jiren, Hit, and any new participants. To challenge him, the other universes would have to find a warrior capable of challenging him or come up with a proper strategy to secure an early elimination.

Vegeta

It’s hard to imagine anything stopping Vegeta from returning as a competitor. As the second strongest Z-Warrior and Goku’s biggest rival for the top spot, the Saiyan price is a lock for any future Universe 7 team. He hasn’t managed to surpass Goku, but he did make some shocking gains in Dragon Ball Super’s ending when he used Super Saiyan Blue Evolved to beat Universe 11’s Top. This power-up will be sorely needed if Zeno holds another tournament.

Broly

The Legendary Super Saiyan could stand in for Frieza as Goku’s wild card pick. Frieza fought for Universe 7 only because he wanted to be resurrected. Now that he’s back among the living, he’d have little motivation to help Goku a second time. There are plenty of characters Goku could turn to instead of him, but few would make good substitutes for a warrior of Frieza’s power level. Perhaps the only one who could actually top him would be Broly, who is arguably in the same class as Jiren. If Broly can keep his anger in check, Universe 7’s chances of winning would skyrocket.

Gohan

For much of Dragon Ball Super, Gohan’s power level was disappointing to say the least. The character who was once Earth’s greatest defender slacked off so much that he couldn’t even beat Piccolo in a sparring match. But thanks to his leadership skills and his determination to get back into fighting shape, Gohan emerged as Dragon Ball’s third strongest Z-Warrior. What he was able to pull off as Universe 7’s team captain demonstrated just how indispensable he really is. If it wasn’t for Gohan’s valiant efforts against Dypso, the Z-Warriors would have fallen to Universe 11’s last three fighters. All things considered, Goku bringing back Gohan as their leader is a no-brainer.

Android 17

It would be a huge missed opportunity if the next Universe 7 team didn’t include the Tournament of Power’s winner. Android 17 may not have been their strongest fighter, but his performance throughout the 48-minute battle made him the saga’s breakout star. He flew under the radar through most of the fighting, but his status as the first tournament’s champion would put a target on his back for sure. 17 may have to train even harder if he has any hope of lasting as long as he did the first time. Given that he’s powerful enough to fight Super Saiyan Blue Goku, 17 would be in a good position to help guide them toward another victory.

Piccolo

Piccolo proved his worth to Universe 7’s team when he took down four fighters and helped Gohan beat Universe 6’s Namekians. Obviously, he’s much stronger than characters like Vegeta have given him credit for. As Piccolo pointed out during his fight with Gohan, he too has been making some improvements. Though it had seemed early on in Dragon Ball Super that Piccolo was no longer relevant, what he did in the Tournament of Power indicated that he’s on his way back to being one of the most powerful Z-Warriors. In fact, he may have even overtaken Buu at this point. Depending on what transpires in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero when he and Gohan battle the Red Ribbon Army, he could be Super Saiyan Blue-level in the next anime.

Majin Buu

There was a time when Majin Buu was considered to be insanely powerful. Admittedly, those days have passed. That being said, Buu is still several levels above characters like Yamcha, Chiaotzu, Krillin, Master Roshi, Tien, and possibly Android 18. That’s why it was so important to Goku that he fight in the Tournament of Power. Falling asleep caused him to miss out the first time around, but if the Z-Warriors can avoid a repeat of this scenario, Buu could turn out to be a dependable asset in combat. If Goku were to bring in Buu, he would need one less of the anime’s weaker Z-Warriors, meaning that Tien, Krillin, 18, or Roshi could be dropped from the roster.

Master Roshi

After being passed by nearly every Z-Warrior (including Chiaotzu), Master Roshi shocked everyone by beating Tien in a Dragon Ball Super episode. Apparently, Roshi has been training in secret. Thanks to the anime’s retcon of Roshi’s power level, the character is a force to be reckoned with and a character they may be able to count on in a second Tournament of Power. The Turtle Hermit’s multiple victories in the tournament show that Goku keeping him on the team would be a sensible move.

Android 18

Despite being significantly weaker than her brother, Android 18 outlasted most of the Z-Warriors and held on until there were only a few participants left. Since she had to be convinced to compete, there’s a chance 18 she won’t be interested in fighting a second time, but if the stakes are high enough, Goku may be able to sway her. But this time, she may have to fight without her husband’s help. Krillin tried hard to carry his own weight, but instead became the first Universe 7 team member to fall. Krillin losing so early could prompt him to skip the next competition.

Yamcha

Perhaps in the interest of mixing things up and making the new team feel unique to the last one, Dragon Ball Super could trade Tien or Krillin for Yamcha for its next tournament. For years, the anime ignored Yamcha, even though the Desert Bandit was usually depicted to be in the same league as them. Fans of the character – as well as Yamcha himself – wanted him to participate with the rest of the Z-Warriors, but that chance never came. Much to his disappointment, Goku completely overlooked him. Dragon Ball could correct the anime’s disrespect of the character by finally giving him his turn in the spotlight. Since he may have been frustrated by Goku’s decision not to choose him, it’s possible that Yamcha has resumed his training and will be stronger than ever when the anime returns.
