Comic books over the years have become very open-minded which has led to the creation of many heroes and villains of the LGBTQ+ community. This is perfect as those readers, viewers, or gamers now have more characters that they can relate to and be inspired by.

Combined with some great adventures and artwork, DC has really done well in representing the LGBTQ+ community. Some characters might have some old school fans surprised that they happen to be part of the community. This includes even iconic characters that have been around for decades.

10 Midnighter

Midnighter is a character from the Wildstorm comics and an equivalent to Batman. A dark, brawler vigilante who can take on any opponent if he needs to. One of the biggest differences between him and Batman is his sexuality.

Midnighter is openly queer and is married to Apollo who is essentially the Wildstorm equivalent to Superman. He’s very much in love with Apollo and even after they are no longer an item, Midnighter is willing to go to hell and back for him.

9 Obsidian – Todd James Rice

One of the earliest cases of a queer superhero would be Obsidian of the Justice Society Of America. Obsidian is the son of Alan Scott, the original Golden Age Green Lantern; he can control shadows and is a former villain. Not much is developed about Todd Rice’s sexuality, it’s more of a bonus trait for his character.

The most DC has ever gone into Obsidian’s love life was on CW’s Legends Of Tomorrow. Not only did the Legends meet Obsidian as a young man but also as an older man played brilliantly by Lance Henriksen.

8 John Constantine

Caring more about his job than anything else, John is typically seen without a lover. However, when he does: it turns out he is not picky. John Constantine is a bisexual man who can have a girlfriend like Zatanna but has also had several boyfriends in the past.

In Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, John Constantine showed to even have a love for some metahumans. It was explicitly shown that King Shark is an ex-boyfriend of John Constantine. So that technically makes him “bi-special.”

7 Aquaman – Kaldur’ahm

Another bisexual character, the second Aqualad AKA Kaldur’ahm showed to have feelings for Tula of Atlantis and Rocket in the first two seasons of Young Justice. Well, much to the surprise of fans everywhere: Season Three showcased that Kaldur, as the new Aquaman, is bisexual.

Kaldur returned to Atlantis to share a very lovely on-screen kiss with Wyynde, his lover. Young Justice has always been great at bringing diversity in its cast of characters and Kaldur being bisexual is the icing on an already delicious cake.

6 Thunder – Anissa Pierce

The daughter and apprentice of Black Lightning, Anissa Pierce is very much a lesbian character. She has the power to control her density to bring the thunder and become indestructible. In the comics, her love life isn’t explored as much.

The Arrowverse is where the Black Lightning series fully explores her sexuality. Anissa, played by Nafessa Williams, is the fiancee of Grace Choi and has become a fan-favorite character on the show.

5 Brainiac 5 – Querl Dox

In the comics, Querl Dox displays affection for Lyle Norg AKA Invisible Kid but never had any official relationship with him. In the Legion Of Superheroes animated series, there were some undertones that hinted that Brainy had feelings for Clark Kent. Even one of the creators stated that there was supposed to be a subtle love brewing but the execs didn’t want that on a kids show.

In other cases, Brainiac 5 has had romances with characters like Supergirl and Dreamer. As a result, fans have labeled Brainiac 5 as a pansexual character. Many of them wishing that Brainy and Lyle would be an official item.

4 Harley Quinn – Harleen Quinzel

The crazy jester girlfriend of the Joker who has shown much obsession and devotion to him. However, Harley Quinn has had other relationships in the comics and none are more famous than her on/off-again relationship with Poison Ivy.

Harley has also had relationships with Batman himself, Nightwing, Deadshot, and even the Amazonian Princess herself: Wonder Woman. In the Injustice canon, she actually ended up marrying Harley Quinn.

3 Poison Ivy – Pamela Lillian Isley

Though Poison Ivy is infamous for seducing men (often to their graves) including the big bad bat, she seems to have more pleasure seducing women. As mentioned, Poison Ivy’s most famous relationship would have to be with Harley Quinn.

It’s a fan favorite relationship due to their rather adorable chemistry and drama that goes along with it. For all the evil things Ivy has done, she seems to genuinely care about Harley’s safety and hates when Harley returns to Joker.

2 Wonder Woman – Diana Prince

Growing up for centuries on an island entirely populated by women? It’s silly to think that Diana never had any female companionship. Of course, she has had relations with men like Steve Trevor, Superman, and even Batman in the DCAU.

However, in more recent years, DC has confirmed that Diana is bisexual. Even before the confirmation, there have been some sexual undertones between her and some female characters. Her rivalry with Cheetah really hints at the possibility that they secretly love each other.

1 Batwoman – Kate Kane

Kate Kane is the cousin of Bruce Wayne who becomes the more grounded vigilante known as Batwoman. In an ironic twist, the character that was initially created to be nothing more than a romance for Batman is rebooted as a very upfront and open lesbian.

Kate Kane’s story really delves into the wonders of having pride in who one is. However, it also perfectly goes into the struggles with prejudice and the bigots when being so open about oneself. Combined with a beautiful romance with Renee Montoya and fun adventures, Batwoman has become the definitive LGBTQ+ member of the DC Multiverse.
