DC fan art imagines what young Nicolas Cage would look like as Superman. With The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent — a celebration of all that is Nicolas Cage — soon to be released, fans look back to what might have been. A starring role as the Man of Steel may be the only thing missing in the venerable actor’s long resume of acting roles.

After Superman’s cinematic appeal dropped off in the late 80s with the poorly received Superman IV: The Quest for Peace following the equally derided Supergirl (1984), a chance for another Superman film looked dire. Due to a resurgence in popularity thanks to the Death of Superman comic series, producers were clambering for another shot at the big screen. Many iterations of a new Superman story bounced around Warner Bros. in the mid-to-late 90s, finally resulting in a return to form with Tim Burton in the director’s chair and Nicolas Cage as the titular superhero for Superman Lives. Unfortunately, the production entered development hell and couldn’t escape it, with the project completely abandoned in 1999.

French artist Kibar imagines a young Nicolas Cage in a homage to the actor’s near-miss as the last son of Krypton. The artist rendered three portraits of Cage as the celebrated hero, first in the classic blue suit with the red cape. Then as Cage in the black Recovery suit with a silver ‘S.’ The final portrait shows what Cage would look like as Clark Kent, the mild-mannered alter ego of the superhero. Check out the image below.

Ultimately, Nicolas Cage would get his chance to play Superman in the animated Teen Titans GO! to the Movies. Although the role is in voice only, fans were delighted by the actor finally playing the role he wished to play decades before. With a resurgence in popularity, thanks to hits like Pig, Mandy, and buzz surrounding the upcoming The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, fans would most likely welcome Cage into the role if he was given another chance.

Although the actor may be considered too old for a Superman reboot, there is still room to fit the actor into the DCEU canon. With the current popularity of the multiverse plot device, such as Marvel introducing two previous iterations of Peter Parker into the MCU in No Way Home, there can be a real possibility of Cage’s Superman Lives‘ version of the hero to enter the DCEU. With the upcoming Flash film explicitly dealing with the consequences of changing the past and creating new timelines, the door is open for a return of past superhero cameos, as evidenced by the inclusion of Michael Keaton returning as Bruce Wayne. Although it is unlikely that Nicolas Cage will ever appear as Superman in a live-action film, as the recent Crisis on Infinite Earths Arrowverse crossover, which had multiple Supermen from past TV and film appearances, has shown, there is hope.
