DC Comics will be paying tribute to the late prolific writer Dwayne McDuffie with a new collection featuring some of his most beloved comics. With titles from Superman to Firestorm, the upcoming release will cover a lot of ground within the DC Universe.

Fans of DC are likely to know of Dwayne McDuffie or at least recognize his name, as he contributed a lot to the publisher throughout his career. Originally creating Milestone Media and publishing through DC in the ‘90s, McDuffie created superheroes such as Static, Icon, and Hardware among others who gained their own fanbases. He also had a big part in the DC Animated Universe, writing for Static Shock and Justice League Unlimited, and later writing for DC’s animated movies, with Justice League: Doom, Crisis on Two Earths, and the adaptation of All-Star Superman. For many fans, his voice as a writer became a key part of all that the DC Universe embodies.

DC Comics has recently announced that the hardcover collection of 12 issues written by McDuffie will be released on December 14, with stories including Superman, Batman, the Demon, Impulse, Kid Flash, Firestorm, and the Justice League. The volume will feature Action Comics #847, The Demon #26-29, Impulse #60, JLA Showcase 80-Page Giant #1, Batman: Gotham Knights #27, Sins of Youth: Kid Flash/Impulse #1, and Firestorm: The Nuclear Man #33-35. Such tribute collections aren’t a frequent release from DC, which emphasizes the praise that McDuffie’s work deserves. Since his passing, it’s become even clearer how much of an impact he has had on the industry, and especially in the world of DC.

Of course, there are still plenty of great stories that the writer-editor contributed which are not being featured in the collection. Theoretically, this could just be the first of several volumes to come, as another highlight of his DC work came with Justice League of America. With Milestone’s relaunch just around the corner, and the petitioning of fans for a new release of McDuffie’s original series, like Static, Icon, and Hardware, this announcement makes that seem like a real possibility. Although some of these titles have been partially added to the digital library of DC Universe Infinite, the majority of issues have never been reprinted. Now, it makes sense more than ever for these groundbreaking stories to receive a quality print collection.

For fans of DC Comics, this is exciting news, as the publisher is already beginning a new series called Infinite Frontier intended to homage comics history. Even for a younger audience, this collection makes the previous iteration of DC all the more accessible, with a specific selection of issues by Dwayne McDuffie that have stood the test of time.
