Warning! Spoilers for Robin #1 by DC Comics below!

After earning a spot in one of the deadliest tournaments in the DC Universe, Robin arrogantly called for anyone and everyone to challenge him – leading to his death at the hands of Flatline. In Robin #1, Damian Wayne greatly underestimates his new opponent, and as a result, he had his heart ripped out of his chest by his fellow competitor.

Robin is at a bit of a crossroads currently in the pages of DC Comics. Damian has decided to spurn his father, Batman, as well as the rest of the Bat-Family, to pursue the League of Lazarus Tournament. Robin is upset his parents kept the secretive competition from him and is eager to prove he can win it. After fighting King Snake (Bane’s father), a representative for the island grants him access to the tournament and when he arrives, Damian’s ego comes bursting through – and it leads to his surprising downfall in his very first fight.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Robin #1 by Joshua Williamson, Gleb Melnikov, and ALW’s Troy Peteri, Robin takes a ship to the mysterious Lazarus Island, where he meets some of his competitors before being introduced to the host of the League of Lazarus Tournament, Mother Soul. When she goes over the rules of the upcoming fights, Robin jumps in mid-speech and tells her “this chitchat is a waste of time.” He puts a huge target on his back, by arrogantly telling the bloodthirsty crowd he’s Batman and Talia Al Ghul’s son and invites anyone to challenge him. A new hero named Flatline accepts and after the two exchange blows, she rips out his heart.

Flatline is Robin’s opposite, as she was trained by great fighters who died in battle and absorbed their defeats to learn from their losses. Robin’s arrogance led him to fight first and think second. Flatline, on the other hand, used what she learned to kill Damian by pulling his heart right out of his chest. The comic ends with Robin realizing he’s dead.

Robin’s death is shocking as it’s one heck of a way to end the series’ first issue. But, considering they’re on Lazarus Island, and likely have access to Lazarus Pits that can resurrect the fallen hero, readers shouldn’t expect him to stay dead very long. Still, when he comes back, Robin will need to check his ego and realize the League of Lazarus Tournament isn’t just fun and games – it’s life and death, as he quickly and brutally found out. Robin #1 is in stores now.
