While a third season for the acclaimed DC Universe animated series Harley Quinn has yet to be announced, the show’s upcoming transition to HBO Max has fans hopeful. Even if the series does end, it ended on a great note. But there are still so many directions for the show to go.

The raucous humor of the show offers as many possibilities as the pathos it generates from its considerate treatment of Harley (and Poison Ivy). Still, with the characters growing and changing, there are some places the show shouldn’t go (like backward). Here are five theories about season three that make sense (and five that don’t).

10 Makes Sense: On The Run

One theory about season three is that Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn will be on the run following the failed attempt by Commissioner Gordon and the GCPD to capture the criminals.

This makes a lot of sense, and for a show that’s already spent a fair amount of time hopping around – with trips to Themiscyra and Apokolips – it’s perfectly in keeping with the show’s daredevil spirit. The only question is will it become a roadshow, or will they settle in one place?

9 Doesn’t: Joker Will Play A Big Role

With Harley Quinn, it’s a safe bet that the Joker is somewhere close by. For the first two seasons of the show, that was more or less the case. Some fans might expect the Joker to play a big role in season three, but Harley has finally stepped out of his shadow.

To have the Joker around a lot – or really at all – would be a signifier of Harley not really realizing the self-growth she has experienced over the course of the show so far.

8 Makes Sense: Kite Man Becomes The Villain

One villain who could and should play a bigger part is Kite Man. Though the show has transformed this once D-list villain into, well, a D-list just sort of ok guy, it’s possible he could turn back to his villainous roots.

Kite Man showed some maturity at the end of season two when he walked away from his engagement to Poison Ivy, acknowledging her heart was with someone else. But after some time apart, his hurt might turn into anger.

7 Doesn’t: More Batman

Like the Joker, Batman makes sense in the show. But maybe less so now. If Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy (and the rest of the gang) are on the run, then it’s likely they won’t be spending much or any time in Gotham. That would seem to preclude the Caped Crusader.

Batman wouldn’t have to be completely left out of the show, though. His involvement with the Justice League and Harley’s innate ability to get into any and all trouble means he’s bound to show up somehow.

6 Makes Sense: Joel Schumacher Tribute

The recent passing of director Joel Schumacher has led to a reconsideration of his two Batman films, both of which had a gonzo spirit, not unlike the new Harley Quinn animated series (though it’s maybe more intentional on the show).

In season two, the series included a funny Tim Burton tribute at Poison Ivy and Kite Man’s almost wedding. One thing that would make enormous sense in season three is a tribute for the late Schumacher – something big, bold, and colorful.

5 Doesn’t: Less Commissioner Gordon

While the Joker, Batman, and Gotham might be in the rearview for Harley and the gang, Commissioner Gordon shouldn’t be. Fans of the show enjoy the darkly comic take on the reliable Bat-ally, with a great vocal performance by Christopher Meloni.

Gordon is always teetering on the edge in the series, and fans likely expect his zealous pursuit of the gang to continue in season three (and maybe beyond). It wouldn’t be the show if Gordon wasn’t stressed out about everything he has to do.

4 Makes Sense: Doctor Psycho Will Seek Revenge

One of the best things about the show – of the many great things – is Doctor Psycho. Last season, he betrayed the gang and tried to sell Harley Quinn out to Darkseid, as one does.

He was thwarted by true love and just bad planning, but one theory that makes sense is that’ll try and get revenge. Doctor Psycho is too funny and too much a part of the gonzo nature of the show to leave behind with the shift in the status quo at the end of season two.

3 Doesn’t: Girls Night Out

A lot of fans may expect many new characters and scenarios for season three, including a possible reprise of the famous The New Batman Adventures episode “Girls Night Out.” This fan-favorite featured a team-up with Harley, Ivy, and Live Wire, with Supergirl and Batgirl intervening.

Having any of those characters show up would be great (Batgirl has already been established in the series) but anything other than a sly homage to the episode would be too much. The direction of the new series should always be forward.

2 Makes Sense: Power Girl

One way it can chart some new territory would be introducing Power Girl, who hasn’t made that big of a dent outside of comic books yet. Thanks to the comics, Power Girl and Harley Quinn do have a relationship the show could build on.

She would be an interesting wrinkle in the developing romance between Harley and Ivy, or perhaps another heroic obstacle for the new couple to overcome. Or they could just all share fashion tips. It’s likely Harley would comment on Power Girl’s, um, choices.

1 Doesn’t: Harley And Ivy Will Break Up

Nothing lasts forever, but having spent two seasons building up the romance between Harley and Ivy, it would be a shame to mess with it. Fans might expect or worry that’s going to be the case, but this is one theory the show’s creative team has already put the kibosh on – the couple won’t break up.

It’s likely they will face some trials and tribulations in season three, but knowing that the show will focus on them getting through them together gives fans a lot to look forward to.
