In 2019, DC launched their horror line of independent books known as Hill House Comics under their adult-oriented Black Label imprint as a means to further embrace diversity among their superhero-focused publication of comics. Founded by horror/suspense writer Joe Hill (Locke & Key), Hill House Comics quickly gained prominence with Hill and artist Leomacs (Lucifer) seven-issue miniseries Basketful of Heads.  The series saw a teen named June Branch in the heart of a mystery. Basketful of Heads was a hit with readers as well as critics and sold over a million copies upon its initial release. While a Basketful of Heads sequel has remained inactive discussions through the series creators, nothing was ever truly concrete… until now.

According to DC Comics, the upcoming six-issue sequel series titled Refrigerator Full of Heads will once again venture to the land of Brody Island, where the violent axe used to torture the original series’ inhabitants, remains. Rather than simply reestablish the characters featured in the previous story, Refrigerator Full of Heads will follow a new hapless couple in Calvin Beringer and Arlene Fields, who inadvertently come into contact with the evils surrounding the fabled island. Joining both the couple and readers will be an entirely new cast of mysterious Brody inhabitants who may prove to be either friend or foe. At the center of the chaos looks to be the axe, which is hinted to be uncovered just in time to start a new era of violence and mayhem.

It’s often easy to forget that the comic book medium can be used as a platform to tell stories other than heroes in capes and costumed crusaders. Horror comics are becoming increasingly few and far between in a comics landscape increasingly dictated by the cinematic box office. Image Comics had a hit with Robert Kirkman’s long-running zombie tale The Walking Dead while Dark Horse Comics are for Mike Mignola’s paranormal detective Hellboy. As DC Comics prepares to return to the world of Basketful of Heads, the superhero publication is signifying that they can stand in the ring of horror as well.

DC Comics’ Refrigerator Full of Heads #1 will release to select comic retailers on October 19th.
