Warning! Spoilers for Justice League #61 by DC Comics below.

The Justice League’s newest threat has already proven to be a powerhouse in the DC Universe, but when the superteam makes a visit to his homeworld, Brutus shows how strong he truly is. In Justice League #61, both Superman and Black Adam try to stop the villain in a world where their abilities are heightened and still find themselves in serious trouble.

The current Justice League team has been up against an interdimensional being known as Brutus, who has attacked both Black Adam’s home of Khandaq as well as Hippolyta and the Amazons. While Brutus, who comes from the same homeworld as the hero Naomi, would eventually retreat, he gave the League two incredibly challenging fights with his incredible power. In the new issue of Justice League, the team visits Brutus’ birth world, where they find out their own powers are mysteriously upgraded. Despite the boost, they’re still no match for Brutus.

In Justice League #61 by Brian Michael Bendis, David Marquez, Tamra Bonvillain, and Josh Reed, it’s revealed Brutus is among the survivors of a super-powered event that changed everything on the planet. The villain Zumbado took over the planet, leaving those remaining to seek a new home. One of the survivors, McMurph, developed an interworld teleportation machine to send Brutus on a quest to find a new world to live in. However, upon returning from Earth, the Justice League followed Brutus. On the new planet, they quickly learn their powers – similarly to Brutus – are out of control. When Superman closes his eyes to prevent his heat vision from hurting anyone, Brutus attacks.

Superman tells Brutus they could have helped him, but the villain tells him that’s not his style as he smashes the hero into the ground. Black Adam arrives at the battle with his own increased powers, but after a loud magical blast is seen from the distance by the other Justice League members, they show up on the scene to find both him and Superman on the ground. Brutus tells them when he defeats them, he will make Earth his new home.

Brutus’ incredible strength stems from his exposure to the planet which mysteriously boosts the powers of those who are on it. While Superman and Black Adam both got stronger and tried to take down Brutus, neither hero (especially Superman) had enough time to control their new powers, leading to their eventual takedowns. In order to stop Brutus, the Justice League might have to do without Superman and Black Adam – two of their most powerful members – leading the charge. Justice League#61 is in stores now.
