The next big Crisis event from DC Comics has just been announced, promising to be one of the darkest multiverse-ending events the heroes of the DC Universe have ever faced (without the Justice League). With the new cosmic big bad known as the Great Darkness rising and the upcoming Death of the Justice League storyline, the stakes will be raised quite high. While the DC Universe’s greatest heroes are being set up to fall before this new Crisis begins, it looks as though new heroes will stand together to honor their legacy.

Revealed in recent issues of DC’s Justice League Incarnate from writer Joshua Williamson, the Great Darkness is a being existing outside of the multiverse who seeks to return everything as it was before life and light exploded into existence, making everything nothing once more. While the league of heroes from different worlds (and even Darkseid) have made attempts to stop the Darkness from invading the multiverse, they haven’t been successful. Furthermore, Justice League Incarnate #4 confirmed that all of the villains of past Crisis events have simply been puppets of the Great Darkness, “each of them unaware of their connection to a larger will“.

Now, DC’s next big event will be titled Dark Crisis according to Gamesradar, featuring the Great Darkness rising forth and entering the multiverse from the void beyond. Spinning out of April’s Death of the Justice League where the Dark Army will kill the League, May’s Dark Crisis will likely feature new heroes uniting to keep the multiverse protected. Furthermore, Williamson posted a telling image on Twitter from artists Daniel Sampere and Alejandro Sánchez with the caption, “It’s about legacy…“, teasing more information to come:

Based upon this new teaser image, it certainly looks like the next generation of heroes will rise to face the Great Darkness, taking the place of their fallen mentors and friends in the Justice League. While he’ll be writing Dark Crisis, Williamson will also be writing Death of the Justice League beforehand as well as the upcoming Shadow War event, seeing DC’s Batman, Robin, and Deathstroke Inc. titles crossing over (which will also have ties to Dark Crisis). As such, it certainly looks as though Williamson’s singular vision will be building towards the next big event coming for DC’s multiverse.

Apparently, every past Crisis was merely a prelude to this upcoming event now that the Great Darkness is finally coming into the multiverse proper. Furthermore, the extreme power it wields will be made quite clear when Death of the Justice League releases from DC Comics. Here’s hoping the heroes who step up to take the Justice League’s place will have what it takes with DC’s imminent Dark Crisis on the horizon.
