Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse is an upcoming Dungeons & Dragons book that contains over thirty playable races that can be used for D&D characters. Many of these races have appeared in other D&D books, but the versions in Monsters of the Multiverse have been updated based on player feedback, with some of them becoming far stronger than they were before. Monsters of the Multiverse will initially be published as part of the D&D Rules Expansion Gift Set in January, before receiving a standalone release in May.

The Player’s Handbook features a selection of playable races that come from the standard fantasy stock, including elves and dwarves, along with a few unusual choices, like the dragonborn and the tieflings. The D&D multiverse is a big place, however, and there are residents on every plane that take up the path of the adventurer. Players will eventually grow weary of humans and demihumans, and will want to choose a more exotic choice for their next character.

Monsters of the Multiverse contains a mixture of races that have appeared in books like Mordenkainen’s Tome of FoesVolo’s Guide to Monsters, and several Unearthed Arcana articles. One major way these races have been changed in Monsters of the Multiverse is that their lore is no longer tied to one setting. The D&D multiverse keeps expanding and Wizards of the Coast wants as many playable races as possible available in the official campaign settings.

Wizards of the Coast revealed during a recent press event that these races will use the stat rules introduced in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, meaning that the player chooses one +2 stat bonus and a +1 bonus. The suggested alignments have been removed, as it was determined that they served no useful purpose for player characters, as almost all of them are extraordinary examples of people within their culture. It was also confirmed that all of the content in Monsters of the Multiverse will be backward compatible with the upcoming 5.5e edition of Dungeons & Dragons, so fans needn’t worry about the information in the book becoming outdated in a few years’ time.

Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse will be released as part of the D&D Rules Expansion Gift Set on January 25 and will receive a standalone release on May 17.
