D&D Unearthed Arcana Hints Dragonlance Campaign Setting Is Returning

A new Unearthed Arcana article for Dungeons & Dragons has been released, and it hints that the Dragonlance campaign setting is returning to D&D, following speculation it would be one of the classic campaign settings of 5e. The campaign setting is best known for its novel series, but it was once considered one of the three main settings in D&D, alongside Greyhawk and the Forgotten Realms.

Dragonlance takes place in the world of Krynn. The novels are set during an age where the gods once caused a massive apocalyptic event, known as the Cataclysm, and refused to answer the prayers of the clerics. The original Dragonlance trilogy follows the Heroes of the Lance, who rediscover the power of the good gods during a time when evil dragons have returned to the world. The D&D campaign setting saw several shake-ups, such as when the gods disappeared again during the Fifth Age, leaving mortals to discover a new form of magic to combat the dragons.

Wizards of the Coast has announced D&D will have two classic settings return in 2022. The official Wizards of the Coast website periodically uploads Unearthed Arcana articles, which contain playtesting material for books that are already in the works. These normally offer hints as to what books are in development, such as the fairy and rabbitfolk article hinting at a Feywild book, which turned out to be The Wild Beyond the Witchlight. The latest Unearthed Arcana article is called “Heroes of Krynn” and it features class options from Dragonlance, suggesting that it will be one of the classic settings returning in 2022.

There were already hints that Dragonlance was coming back. One of the latest D&D books starred a Dragonlance character, as the Fizban from Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons was a mage who aided the Heroes of the Lance. There are also new Dragonlance novels on the way and they’re being written by the authors of the original series. The synopsis of the first new novel suggests that the setting will receive a reboot, which will likely bring the timeline back to the War of the Lance and ignore any of the Fifth Age storylines. The Unearthed Arcana article features the Kender race, the Lunar Magic subclass for the Sorcerer, the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of the High Sorcery backgrounds, and feats related to the backgrounds.

This isn’t the first time that an Unearthed Arcana article has dropped hints about an upcoming Dungeons and Dragons setting, as a previous article has strongly hinted that the Spelljammer campaign setting is returning to D&D. If these predictions are correct, then D&D fans have a lot to be excited about in the future. The Dragonlance setting has one of the most interesting worlds in the Dungeons and Dragons multiverse, and if the new novels are a reboot of the franchise, then fans may have a chance to alter the history of Krynn and take part in the War of the Lance.
