Josh Brolin indicates the Deadpool franchise had a 4-movie plan for Cable prior to the Disney/Fox deal. The actor debuted as the time-traveling soldier in 2018’s Deadpool 2, winning praise for his gruff portrayal opposite Ryan Reynolds’ wise-cracking Merc With a Mouth. The film ended setting up an exciting future for the series, with Deadpool, Cable, and Domino teaming up together to form the X-Force. Fox had plans in place for an X-Force movie that would have focused on Cable. However, in the few years since Deadpool 2 came out, there are numerous questions about the property.

In 2019, Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox became official, moving the film rights to X-Men and Fantastic Four characters to the Mouse House. Deadpool now falls under the Disney umbrella as part of the transaction, and a Deadpool 3 is currently in development at Marvel Studios. It remains to be seen how that film shapes up, but for now, Brolin is shedding light on the original vision had Fox remained a separate entity.

Speaking with ACE Universe, Brolin opened up about his experience with the Deadpool franchise, revealing a plan that called for him to reprise Cable in multiple followups. Check out his comments in the space below:

“Deadpool worked out very much in my favor. Deadpool was supposed to be four movies. Maybe there’ll be more — I don’t know what Marvel has in store — but it turned out to be one really fun movie for me.”

Based on what was known about the Deadpool franchise before the Disney/Fox deal, Brolin’s contract probably called for X-Force, Deadpool 3, and a mystery film (perhaps a Cable solo movie or an X-Force 2). It will be interesting to see what becomes of the series now that it’s under Disney. It’s worth mentioning the studio has no intention of rebooting Deadpool, citing the success of the previous two entries. That would seemingly bode well for Brolin’s future as Cable, since he’s a key part of the series. Brolin had great chemistry with Reynolds, so it’d be nice to see the pair on-screen again. With Deadpool’s penchant for breaking the fourth wall, there’d be a golden opportunity for meta jokes about Brolin’s role as Thanos in the MCU.

While Deadpool 3 is being written, it’ll still be some time before it’s ready to premiere. Marvel’s release slate is filled through May 2023, when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters. This means questions about the direction it takes will linger for a bit longer, though hopefully by the time Deadpool 3 starts filming next year some of these mysteries are resolved. Brolin certainly left an impression in his first turn as Cable, and it would be a shame if he was one-and-done. Ideally, there’s still a place for him in Deadpool 3 and beyond. Since Gemma Chan plays characters in Captain Marvel and Eternals, there’s no reason why Brolin’s Cable can’t be part of the MCU.
