Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has revealed his top three comic book movies, with Deadpool being one of his favorites. The 2016 R-rated superhero movie starred Ryan Reynolds and was directed by Tim Miller. Gunn has directed for both Marvel and DC, having worked on characters related to the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Suicide Squad.
Despite a complicated development history involving a decade-long wait and leaked test footage, Deadpool went on to become a massive hit for 20th Century Fox. Telling the story of wisecracking mercenary Wade Wilson (Reynolds) and his quest to take vengeance on those who ruined his life, the 2016 film became the second highest-grossing film in the larger X-Men franchise and the third highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, with critics and audiences praising it. While the character’s future is now somewhat in flux following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox (Reynolds denies appearing in any upcoming Marvel cameos) one of the MCU’s most well-known and highly acclaimed directors has mentioned his fondness for the character.
Interacting with fans on his personal Twitter, Gunn took part in a new viral trend where he requested fans ask him his “top 3” in any category of their choosing. One follower asked Gunn to list his favorite comic book films, with Gunn quickly responding. In his reply, Gunn stated that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Deadpool, and Iron Man were his top three comic book movies. See the interaction below:

While Gunn is currently working on his next Marvel project with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Deadpool’s future is less certain. Though a third Deadpool film was confirmed to be in development under Disney, many fans question how the new leadership could impact its content when bringing the Merc with a Mouth into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Reynolds will return, the writers of Deadpool and Deadpool 2, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, haven’t as of yet been confirmed to be contributing to the film. Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin instead are currently handling the script for the third installment. Despite the change in writers, an R-rating was confirmed for Deadpool 3, with Reynolds promising an update would come soon.
As one of the most outlandish superhero films of the current era, Deadpool continues to stand out to this day and has since influenced others to follow its example to varying degrees of success. It isn’t hard to see why Gunn is fond of the film. Its bizarre themes and characters aren’t too different from the techniques that Gunn often utilizes, such as adult humor, brutal action, and using cynical antiheroes to tell heartfelt stories. With the similarities between his own work and Deadpool, perhaps Gunn would be a good fit for the character’s MCU future.
