While Captain America is the United States’ national superhero in terms of patriotism and national representation, the national superhero of Canada could have been Deadpool if he had accepted the job. However, in Deadpool #1000, the merc with a mouth refuses after initially being excited about the job offer. Fans can agree that his reasons for doing so are rather sound, especially from his point of view.

Marvel has created several Canadian heroes, but the ones that could have been like Captain America have been killed off – and not resurrected. The Marvel heroes who have remained have identities that do not tie into their Canadian heritage or they do not have the same comparable pull as Captain America.

Deadpool #1000 features the story “Canada, Man!” which has the creative team of Rob Williams, Phil Bond, Tomislav Tikulin, and Jeff Eckleberry. In this story, Marvel acknowledges the fates of their Canada nationalistic heroes and tries to instate Deadpool in the role. Wade Wilson beats several other Canadian heroes and becomes the leader of Canada’s new national super team. Until he finds out he wasn’t anyone’s first choice for the role. This causes him to promptly abandon the role altogether.

This comic sees Deadpool face Puck-Man, Moositaur, Beaver, and Ms. Puck-Man to prove himself as the best Canadian hero. He initially doesn’t plan to take the offer, but when offered a large sum of money, how could he say no? Deadpool could have become a Canadian national treasure, representing the country with Captain America level patriotism – for the right paycheck. Unfortunately, he finds out rather quickly that he wasn’t the first pick for the gig. His suit doesn’t fit. The sleeves are too short, and with good reason. Puck-Man informs him that it was designed for Wolverine. As if that wasn’t insulting enough, Canadacorp also tried to sign the X-Men hero, Northstar, to the deal and failed. Deadpool wasn’t a predominant pick for the job, making him deliver on his promise that a single mention of Wolverine will be met with violence. Deadpool is so displeased, he jumps out of his new team’s maple leaf shaped jet, with the ship on its way to a crash landing.

When it comes to Canada’s superheroes in Marvel, the best known ARE Wolverine, Northstar, and Deadpool. However, none have achieved Captain America status. Major Mapleleaf, one of Marvel’s versions of a nationalistic Canadian hero, was the one of the members of Alpha Flight who has been killed! While the Guardian may be able to fill this role, his comic history isn’t nearly as illustrious. He debuted in 1977, but has sporadic appearances. He also predominantly appears in X-Men related titles, recently having been seen in S.W.O.R.D. #6, 9, and 11. He also appears with Alpha Flight on occasion, but has thus far failed to receive his own book or be part of other major Marvel teams. Contrarily, Wolverine has had numerous and has appeared with the Avengers despite being a predominant member of the X-Men. With this kind of representation, it’s no wonder that Canada spends time seeking a new national face. Unfortunately, Deadpool doesn’t want any part of Wolverine’s sloppy seconds so Canada will have to continue holding auditions for this role.
