Despite how odd it seems, Deadpool and Spider-Man are usually best friends. Still, given the sheer scope of the Marvel multiverse, it’s only natural that there would be more than a few realities where the two came to blows. More than just a normal fight though, one universe saw the Merc with a Mouth team up with none other than Venom to kill Spidey, and the result was absolutely disgusting.

2017’s Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again from writer Cullen Bunn and artist Dalibor Talajic sees Wade Wilson ruthlessly murder every single hero and villain in the Marvel universe. Though Deadpool’s previous rampage across Marvel was entirely self-motivated, this time it’s a cabal of supervillains teaming up to brainwash Deadpool into thinking his brutal assassinations of Marvel heroes are actually fun hangout sessions. He starts out with minor heroes, but after killing Eddie Brock and robbing him of his symbiote, Wade moves on to his first big target; Spider-Man.

Having merged with the Venom symbiote, Deadpool catches Peter off guard as he’s patrolling New York. Peter immediately notices something is off about Venom. He tries to escape the crazed superhero killer, but Venom’s natural strength combined with Wade’s enhanced reflexes overwhelm Spidey. Deadpool tackles his former friend, Spider-Man, into a building top. In Wade’s head, he and Spider-Man are enjoying a pie-eating contest against the Blob. The crowd cheers as the two heroes devour countless Hostess Fruit Pies and win the contest handily. Then readers are given the horrifying reality. With blood dripping from their mouth and viscera dangling from their claws, Deadpool and Venom devour Spider-Man’s brain.

One element that defines this iteration of Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe is tragedy. Though Deadpool’s conscious mind is oblivious to the harm he’s causing, a part of him knows what he’s doing. Talajic’s artwork effortlessly portrays an emotion readers rarely see from a wacky character like Deadpool; guilt. Despite these small bits of guilt and horror though, Wade is powerless to stop himself. He would go on to slaughter all of the X-Men, use Ultron to kill the Avengers, and even murder Marvel’s young heroes like Power Pack and Kamala Khan.

Adding to the tragedy of it all is just how brutal some of the deaths are. Readers are left to imagine the pain, agony, and horror of Spider-Man’s last moments, as it’s made more than clear that nothing about his death was quick or clean. Deadpool is a character that is supposed to be fun wish fulfillment, but his time with Venom and Spider-Man proves that the character is just as compelling when working with far more complex emotions.
