Warning! Spoilers ahead for Task Force Z #3

In the latest issue of DC Comics’ Task Force Z, Deadshot has been resurrected to join the newest Squad thanks to Red Hood. While Floyd Lawton was murdered by Black Mask just as he was about to get out of Task Force X for good, he’s now been brought back to join Task Force Z, fitting right in as a dead rogue-turned-zombie. However, while the possibility exists that he could be granted his full life back, it may not be something Lawton even wants.

In DC’s 2019 Suicide Squad series from Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo, Deadshot and Harley Quinn learned that they had both served their sentences with Task Force X and were finally free. Even so, Floyd Lawton agreed to one last mission to take down the corrupted Task Force program once and for all before finally retiring as a contract killer and getting to be with his daughter, though Deadshot was tragically killed in the process. That being said, it turns out that that wasn’t the end of Lawton’s story in the DC Universe.

Now, the new Task Force Z series from Matthew Rosenberg and Eddy Barrows sees Red Hood leading DC’s newest Squad of zombified DC villains against his will. Partially resurrecting the recently deceased such as Bane, Arkham Knight, Man-Bat, and more, Task Force Z has intentionally turned these foes into the ravenous undead when they could have brought them back to life all the way, thus forcing their compliance by controlling the dosage of Lazarus resin needed to keep them out of the grave. Needing someone he could trust, Red Hood recommended bringing back Deadshot, though Floyd isn’t too happy about it in Task Force Z #3 now that he’s been partially brought back.

Clearly, Deadshot isn’t very happy that his time resting in peace has been interrupted only for him to be on another Squad (and not even fully alive). While Red Hood notes that the Kobra Cult would have attempted to bring him back if Task Force Z hadn’t, Deadshot is still angered that Jason Todd didn’t seem to care whether or not coming back was something Deadshot actually wanted. While the potential bright side exists that Deadshot could eventually be brought back to life and could then return to his daughter like he always intended, Lawton may feel like she might be better off without him.

In any case, Floyd Lawton has halfway returned to the DC Universe (which is certainly a start). However, the fact that he’d rather be dead certainly makes his return bittersweet. Hopefully, Deadshot will soon find a new lease on life working with Red Hood despite being a zombie in the present DC Universe.
