Director Hideo Kojima has revealed that, on top of new weapons, modes, and features, Death Stranding Director’s Cut will also add a new Very Hard mode. The original game first released in 2019, but it’s getting an enhanced and extended version later this summer. While Death Stranding is available on PS4 and PC, Death Stranding Director’s Cut will be a PS5 exclusive.

Death Stranding was met with mixed reception from gamers when it first released and was criticized for its slower pace, with many comparing Death Stranding to a walking simulator. Despite those initial critiques, the Kojima Productions title has a devoted fanbase, and news of an expanded version of the game has been met with excitement and praise from gamers. As well as having legendary developer Kojima at the helm, Death Stranding also has a star-studded cast, featuring actors such as Hannibal‘s Mads Mikkelsen and The Last of Us‘ Troy Baker, as well as famed film director Guillermo Del Toro. Death Stranding Director’s Cut was first revealed during this Summer Game Fest 2021, announced with a parody of Metal Gear Solid.

More details on Death Stranding Director’s Cut have since been confirmed, including its many upgrades and enhancements compared to the original. New weapons, equipment, and vehicles will be included, as well as a variety of new modes, missions, and areas. The Director’s Cut will also add expanded storylines, new online elements, and UI enhancements. Kojima has also now confirmed the addition of a new difficulty mode, simply called Very Hard mode. The news was announced on Twitter following a new look into the game during PlayStation’s most recent State of Play event. While it’s not known just how hard Very Hard mode will be, it’s likely to put even veteran Death Stranding players through their paces.

As well as adding all-new content into the game world, the Death Stranding Director’s Cut will bring PC-exclusive add-ons to console for the first time. Half-Life and Cyberpunk 2077 content in Death Stranding PC included new missions, items, and even a Hacking function, none of which were available for the original PS4 release. Sony has confirmed these extras will be bundled in with the PS5 Director’s CutDeath Stranding Director’s Cut hasn’t been announced for PC, though it’s possible it could come later down the line.

Despite only releasing last year, PS5 is already forming a promising line-up of first-party exclusive hits. Insomniac Games’ recently-released Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has been a resounding success for Sony, despite skipping the PS4 entirely. Those who’ve already sunk endless hours into the PS4 version of Death Stranding won’t need to start from scratch, as it’s been confirmed that PlayStation 4 console save data will be transferable. For existing fans and for newcomers, the new features of Death Stranding Director’s Cut mean it’s already shaping up to be a PS5 essential.

Death Stranding Director’s Cut will be available on PS5 on September 24, 2021. Players who own the PS4 version of Death Stranding can get the PS5 Death Stranding Director’s Cut Digital Deluxe Edition Upgrade for $10.
