Slade Wilson fans will finally have their prayers answered this June, as Batman: The Adventures Continue, a five-part miniseries that is both a continuation and celebration of the famed DC Animated Universe will feature Deathstroke coming face to face with the Dark Knight.

Batman: The Adventures Continue is a spin-off of the ‘90s WB cartoon Batman: The Animated Series, which morphed into several iterations over time, including the New Batman Adventures, and spun-off into several other television programs including Batman Beyond and Justice League. While the “Timm-verse,” as it is known colloquially (named after executive producer Bruce Timm), ended up running the gamut of DC licenses and showcasing many lesser-known characters over the course of the entire expanded continuity’s fourteen year run, the monocular mercenary was never among them. For this new series it appears this absence will be rectified by longtime DCAU writers/directors Paul Dini and Alan Burnett.

According to  DC’s June solicitations, Deathstroke’s presence in Gotham will create a rift between Batman and his protégé Robin, in this continuity a young Tim Drake, who “thinks the swashbuckling mercenary is just here to help.” Longtime fans of the Teen Titans will know that Robin and Deathstroke traditionally do not have a rosy friendship in most stories, so the reference to their traditional animosity could point to the conniving Wilson driving a wedge between the two costumed crusaders. While some might point out that Deathstroke was adapted into the 2003 cartoon Teen Titans, despite the similarity in art style, this series was never part of the DCAU.

The DCAU was known for its gritty realism and emotional narratives, and pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in children’s entertainment for its time. Batman: The Adventures Continue looks to be a purist’s dream when it comes to the storytelling of the old DCAU, as Burnett and Dini were the creative forces behind many of the continuity’s greatest stories and characters, including the critically acclaimed 1993 film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. The series features art by Ty Templeton, who also returns to the DCAU-style after serving as the original artist for Batman Adventures, the comic book adaptation of the 1992 TV series.

Batman: The Adventures Continue #2 will arrive at your local comic book shop on June 3rd, 2020.
