Deep Rock Galactic has just announced its Season 1 update, and its new content includes a completely free battle pass system. Officially released in May of last year and part of Game Pass’ long list of launches, Deep Rock Galactic is a popular indie title that tasks teams of players with completing various objectives inside sprawling mines. The game features destructible environments, procedurally-generated caves, and an abundance of different resources used to upgrade weapons and gear.

The latest addition to Deep Rock Galactic, courtesy of Ghost Ship Games’ YouTube channel, is what the developers call “Season 1: Rival Incursion.” As explained in the Deep Rock Galactic FAQ page, this marks a shift in the game’s development to a focus on seasonal releases on top of regular updates, and it adds a new feature to the game in the form of the Progression Pass. The main selling point of this new battle pass system is that it is free for all players. The addition of a battle pass system in a paid game isn’t a brand new concept, as other releases such as Naraka: Bladepoint and Minecraft Dungeons are introducing battle passes as well, but the free to play angle is sure to be enticing.

On top of this new reward system, the update also includes new weapons, robotic enemies, and a new mission type, Industrial Sabotage, which tasks players with sabotaging and stealing data from a rival mining company. The mission builds up to a large boss fight with a pyramid-shaped robot that players must destroy before stealing the data and evacuating. Deep Rock Galactic‘s largest update is available right now through the experimental build on Steam and is due for an official release on November 4, while Xbox and Game Pass players will be receiving the update on November 18.
