14 The Twelve (2019)

Very few people hope to one day be a part of a jury, especially for a murder case. The Twelve takes audiences on the other side of the road to conviction. A young woman is being accused of murdering her best friend and her young daughter. The jury must decide whether or not she is guilty of the crime.

Audiences go on a journey of corruption, cover-up, and possibly framed murder. The defendant argues that her case was never investigated and there are people who want to see her behind bars. It won’t matter if the jury can’t put aside their personal issues and come to a decision that would either free or convict the defendant.

13 The Valhalla Murders (2020)

This Scandinavian crime drama will send shivers down the spine. Not only does the blue-toned and eerie setting contribute to the story, but the heinous murders will have everyone on edge.

An Oslo detective walks away from crime-solving due to a painful past. But one day, a gruesome murder is committed that brings her back to help a dedicated cop. Bodies are showing up with extensive knife wounds, all of which are connected to a mysterious photo. But the odd part is, the bodies don’t have defensive wounds.

12 Reckoning (2019)

A slew of dead bodies rocks a small suburban town. A quiet community once thought to be safe becomes the hunting ground for a ruthless killer. The investigation starts off with the kidnapping and murder of a young teenage girl. Authorities start to believe it to be the work of a serial killer.

As the investigation goes on, it entangles two fathers and their families as they go on a hunt for the truth, but it takes them on a path that could change and destroy their once-peaceful town.

11 The Sinner (2018)

The Sinner generated some buzz for its psychological and suspenseful twist on crime. The show really got into people’s heads, diving deep into why they did it or how. The show currently has two of three seasons on Netflix, each focusing on one main suspect. These crimes aren’t cut and dry.

The first season is based on Cora (Jessica Biel). On a normal beach day with her family, Cora suddenly gets up in a fit of rage and stabs a man to death. Cora is hiding something she is not aware of. The second season follows a young boy named Julian (Elisha Henig) who admits to murdering his two parents. Detective Ambrose (Bill Pullman) is in charge of the investigation and finds something baffling about the circumstances.

10 The Lies Within (2019)

This Korean drama has a lot of the same elements you’re looking for from Defending Jacob and a little bit more. Much like the miniseries, The Lies Within was also adapted from a novel and follows a story of murder, disappearance, and deceit.

Jo Tae-Sik (Lee Min-ki) wants a simple life as a detective and moves to a rural town. He takes on the case of the death of Lawmaker Kim Seung-Chol (Kim Jong-soo). His car accident doesn’t look clean cut. Soon his daughter’s husband goes missing as well. Kim Seo-hui (Lee Yoo-young) becomes a lawmaker, and, along with Tae-sik, they undercover a conspiracy.

9 Delhi Crime (2019)

This Netflix series will have chills running down your spine. The show is based on the 2012 Delhi gang rape that shocked the world and changed law enforcement. Delhi Crime follows Deputy Commissioner of Police Vartika Chaturvedi (Shefali Shah) in the aftermath of a heinous crime.

A young girl and her boyfriend were attacked on a bus on the way home by a group of men. The women suffered multiple injuries and fatal wounds from sexual assault. The Deputy Commissioner is tasked with finding the culprits as the people of Delhi seeks justice and reform in the police system.

8 Mindhunter (2017)

There is a certain level of intrigue when it comes to the study of serial killers and how their mind operates from the everyday person. Mindhunter revolves around two FBI agents, Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), who help develop a new method of identifying and tracking serial killers in the Behavioral Science Unit.

As they go across the country to interview some of the most famous killers such as Edmund Kemper and Charles Manson, there is a serial killer waiting in their mists. Ford and Tench along with Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) look for behavioral patterns to help capture serial killers before it’s too late.

7 Safe (2018)

Fans would remember Michael C. Hall for playing the popular television serial killer and forensic scientist in Dexter. In 2018, he took on the role of Tom Delaney in the British miniseries, Safe. This series is worth a binge-watch on a Sunday night. Delaney is having a hard time connecting with his two teenage daughters after the passing of his wife.

When one of his daughters goes missing, he takes matters into his own hands and investigates on his own. As he searches frantically for his daughter, he uncovers startling secrets about drugs, deceit, and murder. Will Tom be able to find his daughter as dark secrets are exposed?

6 Broadchurch (2013)

Broadchurch takes place in three series and is a serial crime drama show starring David Tennant as DI Alec Hardy. The first series involves the murder of a local 11-year-old boy, and Hardy must find the cause of death and the possible suspects.

Having trouble moving on from the gravity of the boy’s death. 5 Seven Seconds (2018)

The Netflix crime drama Seven Seconds had audiences talking about its tie to real-life issues and its implications about the social and racial divide in the justice system. A 15-year-old black cyclist is killed in a hit-and-run with the driver being a white police officer.

With the help of his cop coworkers, they cover up the crime. The show follows the aftermath of the crime and the racial tension that follows as the assistant prosecutor KJ (Clare-Hope Ashitey) wants to prosecute the case as a hate crime and negligent homicide.

4 When They See Us (2019)

When They See Us became an online sensation and became highly recognized not only for its acting but its tie to the real-life case of the Central Park Five back in 1989. Five male suspects are accused of raping a white female in Central Park.

Five juveniles of color, Kevin Richardson (Asante Blackk), Antron McCray (Caleel Harris), Yusef Salaam (Ethan Herisse), Korey Wise (Jharrel Jerome), and Raymond Santana (Marquis Rodriguez) were convicted of the crime and sentenced to a maximum term in prison. The miniseries explores the lives of the suspects and the aftermath of the crime and their wrongful conviction.

3 The People Vs. O.J. Simpson (2016)

In 2016, FX created a crime anthology series about one of the most famous Hollywood criminal cases: O.J. Simpson’s trial for the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. In 1994, the case hit widespread media as NFL player and actor O.J. Simpson became a person of interest.

1 Unbelievable (2019)

Unbelievable is an American drama limited series worth watching if you’re enjoying Defending Jacob’s storyline. Based on the 2015 news article “An Unbelievable Story of Rape” by  T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong, the show follows a series of rape cases in Washington and Colorado.

A young girl named Marie (Kaitlyn Dever) is accused of lying about her sexual assault. At the time, there were a series of rapes, and Marie was one of them. Due to police interrogation and intimidation, she recanted her statement, leading police to charge her with false reporting of rape. The show follows Marie’s story and the two detectives as they try to uncover the truth.
