The Sinnoh Region of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl is full of rough terrain and harsh weather that require Hidden Moves like Defog to navigate. As trainers make their way through forests, caves, and mountains on their Pokémon adventure, these Hidden Moves help clear the way and allow players to access new map areas as they progress. Hidden Moves can be taught to Pokémon by using Hidden Machines.

Hidden Machines, or HMs, can be found throughout the Sinnoh overworld and are often obtained by speaking to specific NPCs. Once a Pokémon learns a Hidden Move in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, the move will become available on the Hidden Moves app of the Pokétch, which players can use by pressing the R button. In addition, when a Hidden Move is used, a wild Pokémon who can learn the move will come to help out, so the Pokémon who knows the Hidden Move won’t lose PP.

As its name suggests, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl’s Defog Hidden Move can be used to clear a foggy area so trainers can navigate it. Once used, Defog will remove fog from the entire area, but if players leave and come back, the haze will have settled again, so players will have to use Defog each time they enter the area. Additionally, Defog can only be used outside of battle once the fourth gym leader, Crasher Wake, has been defeated and trainers have earned their Fen Badge.

Where The Defog HM Is In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

The HM for Defog in BDSP can be found in the Great Marsh area’s Safari Zone in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl‘s Pastoria City. It costs 500 PokéDollars to enter a Safari Zone game, which will allow players to either take 500 steps or use 30 Safari Balls before calling them back to the start. Fortunately, trainers don’t need to venture very far into the Safari Zone to claim this HM. Instead, the ace trainer directly to the right of the entrance will give trainers the HM Defog when they speak with him.

Unlike the original versions of Diamond & Pearl, the Pokémon who knows a Hidden Move no longer has to be part of the player’s Pokémon team to use it. Additionally, Hidden Moves can still be used if the Pokémon who knows them is released or traded in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. HM Mules are a thing of the past, as a Hidden Move can now be taught to an eligible low-level Pokémon and register the move in the Pokétch. The Pokémon that knows the Defog HM can be immediately released or sent to a box if the trainer doesn’t want them on their team.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl are available on the Nintendo Switch.
