As the record-breaking anime film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train continues to solidify the franchise’s prominence, fans are anxiously awaiting the series’s second season. After the events that transpire in Mugen Train, it becomes clearer than ever before that protagonist Tanjiro Kamado and his traveling companions must train and reach new heights of power in order to battle the demons that occupy the Upper Moon ranks.

Zenitsu Agatsuma, best known for his incessant screams of fear while awake and his dazzling combat ability while sleeping, reflects what many viewers might feel while facing horrifyingly powerful demons: terror. Although fans are well acquainted with Zenitsu’s wailing, they might be interested in his voice actor, Hiro Shimono, and the other anime he has starred in.

10 ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.: Jean Otus

An underrated tale of political espionage and royal intrigue, ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept. flew under many anime fans’ radars during the Fall 2017 season. Set in the fictional kingdom of Dowa, ACCA explores the eponymous government agency and its multitude of branches, though the narrative details the Territory Inspection Department (TID) specifically.

Jean Otus, the anime’s protagonist, is a high-ranking member of the TID and often travels from Dowa’s capital to the thirteen surrounding states—all of which comprise their own traditions and regional specialties. Calm, cool, and thorough, Otus solves various departmental issues and problems specific to the regions he visits, while an overarching royal mystery unfolds.

9 Baka & Test: Summon the Beasts: Akihisa Yoshii

While Japanese high school culture is commonly featured and depicted in anime, Baka & Test – Summon the Beasts – multiplies the importance of high test scores to a ridiculously entertaining level. Fumizuki Academy mandates that all students must take a test after their freshman year; this test’s importance significantly affects all aspects of its high schoolers’ lives and the results are used to sort students into alphabetically arranged classes.

Akihisa Yoshii, the titular “baka” (idiot), ends up in class F. Utilizing the Academy’s unique system that allows students to summon powerful beings to battle—their strengths based on test scores—Akihisa hopes to win status and privileges from the school’s elite.

8 Berserk: Isidro

Berserk embodies the genre of dark fantasy and has become a beloved manga for its intense narrative elements, gruesome battles, and character-driven arcs—though its anime adaptations have never fully satisfied fans, often due to animation issues or liberties taken with the story. In the 2016 adaptation, Hiro Shimono brings similar annoying-but-lovable energy to Isidro, a young thief with large aspirations.

After leaving his village and spending time wandering, living off little food, and narrowly avoiding death, Isidro is saved by Guts. In awe at Guts’s fighting abilities, Isidro resolves himself to follow the mighty warrior—despite Guts’s protesting—in the hopes of becoming as mighty as the legendary “Hundred Man Slayer,” unaware that he is now following his mythical role model.

7 My Hero Academia: Dabi

Although there are many contributing factors to My Hero Academia‘s wild popularity, it’s difficult to argue against the diverse cast of heroes and villains, all of which possess their own motivations and aspirations. One of the League of Villains’ most powerful and enigmatic members, Dabi, has sparked many fan theories within the community due to his potential origin and his incredible, self-immolating fire quirk.

Less jocular or friendly than some of the League’s members, Dabi possesses a cold demeanor that’s indicative of his decision to prioritize his own schemes above all else. While many members of the League seem to feel they have found a home, Dabi’s attitude suggests his participation is a means to an end.

6 Horimiya: Shuu Iura

Stealing the hearts of viewers throughout the course of the Winter 2021 season, Horimiya consistently delivered touching moments, wonderful character progression, and several endearing romances over the course of the series. Although some critics complain that the cast of characters became too bloated and detracted from the romance of Hori and Miyamura, many fans found the multitude of different personalities and backgrounds to be entertaining.

While a minor character without a romantic interest, Shuu Iura’s dynamic character offered an interesting look into the “class clown” stereotype; during school scenes, Iura plays a primarily comedic role, while he is shown to be far more reserved and responsible at home as he looks out for his litter sister.

5 JOKER GAME: Miyoshi

Depicting the tumultuous period just before WWII’s outbreak, JOKER GAME‘s adaptation of real-world political drama into an anime format is unique and striking—the espionage and intrigue are also enhanced by the temporally disorganized episodes.

The series follows the D-Agency, a Japanese military branch stigmatized for its surreptitious strategies and deceptive tactics, and its spies as they carry out dangerous and clandestine missions. As an agent, Miyoshi is seemingly held in high esteem by his commander, though this respect is subtle and implicit. Overly concerned with his appearance, Miyoshi’s persona is carefully cultivated to achieve the perception that he is a member of the social elite.

4 The World God Only Knows: Keima Katsuragi

The World God Only Knows is an anime that plays with the genre of romantic comedy by introducing elements of dating-sim games and establishing outrageous, dire consequences. The series protagonist, Keima Katsuragi, is a gaming Casanova; known in the dating simulator community as “The God of Conquests,” Katsuragi’s online status is severely tempered by his lack of popularity at school and zero experience with real-life women.

Resulting from a misunderstanding, Katsuragi accepts a challenge from a demon and must conquer the hearts of school girls in order to exercise them from older, more evil demons that occupy the negative interstices in their hearts.

3 Myriad Colors Phantom World: Haruhiko Ichijou

While flashy and light-hearted in appearance, Myriad Colors Phantom World features a world that has fundamentally been changed by a purportedly accidental release of a virus. Forever altering the perception of humans, the population is now able to see what are essentially monsters from another dimension.

The anime’s narrative picks up generations after the virus’s effect and follows children who have gained other-worldly powers and abilities that are used to defeat (“seal”) the encroaching phantoms. Haruhiko Ichijou, a student at the battle-training school Hosea Academy, is intelligent and caring, though he is often ridiculed for the impracticality of his sealing ability; although difficult to manage in combat settings, Haruhiko can seal phantoms by drawing them in his sketchbook.

2 Attack on Titan: Connie Springer

Attack on Titan‘s penchant for brutality and mystery has been clear from the anime’s first episode. Fans of the series often cite the anxiety and tension that is elicited from the feeling that any character could meet their end at any time. These worries are only exasperated by the occupation of many of Attack on Titan‘s main characters: The Scout Regiment.

Initially tasked with exploring the world outside of the walls, often ridiculed by the public for the seemingly needless and dangerous nature of the job, the Scouts become integral to the preservation of humanity once the walls are shown to be penetrable. Trained alongside Erin, Mikasa, and Armin, Connie Springer’s childlike obstinance is quickly tempered by the trials and tribulations he faces, particularly his role in uncovering the human origins of titans.

1 The Devil Is A Part-Timer!: Hanzou Urushihara

Imagining the lord of Hell, Satan, stranded on Earth and forced to work in the fast-food industry, The Devil is a Part-Timer! is both wildly comedic and philosophical. Having been thwarted by a group of heroes, Satan escapes from imminent defeat in the world of Ente Isla by traveling to Earth—a planet noticeably lacking in magical energies.

As one of the surviving generals in Satan’s army, Lucifer also escapes to Earth and takes on the name of Hanzou Urushihara. Playing off his stigma as a fallen angel, Hanzou is conniving and duplicitous, often tricking people into doing his bidding. On Earth, much to his chagrin, his proclivity for video games and staying inside earns him the title of “hikikomori” (a socially withdrawn shut-in).
