Demon Slayer is officially getting a season 3 that will follow the manga’s Swordsmith Village Arc. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is one of Japan’s most popular anime exports, based on the manga by Koyoharu Gotouge. After the lead character Tanjiro Kamado’s family is killed and his sister becomes a demon, he becomes a demon slayer and goes on a variety of supernatural adventures. The anime series is relatively recent, having begun its run in Spring 2019.

It was followed by the film adaptation Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train in 2020, which is not only the highest-grossing anime film, it’s the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time, having beat out the previous #1 film Spirited Away by over $100 million. It accomplished this gargantuan feat despite depressed pandemic-era box office results across the board for nearly any other film at the time. The second season capitalized on this success by readapting that storyline and continuing to push further through the manga’s subsequent arc.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Today, the final episode of Demon Slayer season 2 aired in Japan. While it has yet to come to the U.S., the episode featured a short clip at the end teasing that season 3 is already confirmed. The new season will follow the Swordsmith Village Arc, which has already appeared in the source manga series. Although the clip doesn’t feature any new footage, it features still tableau images of two major characters from the arc before fading to black. The Swordsmith Village Arc is a popular arc from the original Demon Slayer manga that ran from issues 100 to 127, published in English from May through August 2020. It follows Tanjiro attempting to find a replacement for his sword, which is constantly in need of repair. Over the course of the arc, he meets the love hashira Mitsuki Kanroji and the mist hashira Muichiro Tokito, then embarks on a quest to discover the secret weapon that is the source of the town’s strength.

Demon Slayer is one of the top anime hits of the modern age, running neck and neck with My Hero Academia for popularity in both Japan and international markets. There was certainly very little doubt that they would be producing season 3, considering how ravenous the audience continues to be for the anime. However, there had been rumblings that the franchise might be preparing to launch another movie, so this confirmation disproves that line of thought. However, fans can rest assured that a new movie will come at some point, considering how much money the first one made.
