Demon Slayer (aka Kimetsu no Yaiba) is a dark manga series about a boy named Tanjirou Kamado who swears vengeance on all Demons after his family is killed by them. Complicated by the fact that Tanjirou’s sister Nezuko has now become a Demon (albeit one with human emotion), Tanjirou joins the Demon Slayer Corps and teams up with other battle-hardened Demon Slayers to obliterate the Demons and hopefully find a cure for his sister.

Sounds like heavy stuff… and it is, but like virtually every pop culture phenomenon circulating the Internet, Demon Slayer has also spawned some funny, offbeat, and just plain weird Internet memes. Although it’s difficult picking the best Demon Slayer memes given the wide variety of choices, here are our picks.

Michael Jackson Got Reincarnated As A Demon

Every great manga adventure series have a memorable villain, and Demon Slayer certainly has one of the most frightening. Muzan Kibutsuji is the original Demon and easily the most powerful. Able to regenerate instantly from battle damage and kill his enemies in a variety of disturbingly horrific ways, Muzan considers himself a force of nature, something many of his opponents may agree on.

That being said, for all of his terrifying power, Muzan Kibutsuji doesn’t exactly look particularly horrifying in many of his appearances. Instead, with his pointed chin, stringy black hair, and trademark hat, he bears a striking resemblance to… Michael Jackson. Yes, apparently the Lord of all Demons is a dead ringer for the King of Pop, leading one Demon Slayer meme to proclaim that Kimetsu no Yaiba should be called “That Time Michael Jackson Got Reincarnated As A Demon,” complete with side-by-side comparisons of Jackson and Muzan Kibutsuji. It’s actually disturbing on a completely different level, but it does have a point.

Nezuko Expresses Fan Sentiment

Of all Demon Slayer characters, Nezuko Kamado is easily the most sympathetic, being a human girl who gets transformed into a Demon – yet who still retains a sense of loyalty and love for her brother. As such, it seems appropriate that Nezuko be the focus on a Demon Slayer meme that shows her crying to showcase fan sorrow at the end of the first season of the Demon Slayer anime. Right below this image, however, the meme goes on to show Nezuko dancing – to show fan anticipation of the upcoming Demon Slayer movie!

Breathing is Fun

The members of the Demon Slayer Corps all practice different Breathing Styles to assist them in combat. Each Breathing Style allows a Slayer to use specific and concentrated breathing patterns to increase both lung capacity and the amount of oxygen in the blood. By increasing the oxygen content, Demon Slayers can increase their mental concertation and physical abilities, allowing them to fight Demons.

Both the manga and anime spend a lot of time covering different breathing styles, from the Water Breathing Style to the Breath of Love to Breath of Stone, to gage the power levels of different Demon Slayers. However, one Demon Slayer meme shortens this all to a single sentence by describing Demon Slayer as “Breathing is Fun.”

Playing With The Neighbor Kids

Some Demon Slayer memes require some explanation, especially for people who aren’t familiar with the manga or anime. This Internet meme, though, is funny in its simplicity. After a line stating “Mom: why don’t you go to play with neighbor’s kids?” the meme goes on to show who these “neighbor’s kids” are by offering a terrifying image of some demons clearly ready to slaughter some innocent children. Probably not the best playmates.

Lion King Reenactment

Crossovers are always fun, but this one might be a bit overused. After being superimposed over the famous opening scene from Disney’s The Lion King, Tanjirou “presents” his Demon sister Nezuko by lifting her over Pride Rock like Rafiki did to Simba. Meanwhile, Mufasa and Sarabi look on, bewildered. The Demon Slayer meme even states, “Stop with the Nezuko memes already,” but apparently the creator didn’t get the memo.
